⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to position I or II if battery permits; if battery is completely dead, proceed to override method.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is beneath a small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter console, near the base of the shifter lever.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover.
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually shift to Neutral without pressing the brake.
- Once in Neutral, replace the cover and verify the vehicle can roll freely before loading.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Use the override slot as described—no power is required to physically release the shifter mechanism. The brake pedal will feel very firm without power assist, but the override bypasses the brake interlock entirely.
