Parts
- HVAC control panel assembly ร 1 โ Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Control cable set (if damaged) ร 1 โ Use OEM specification
- Panel mounting hardware ร 1 โ Use existing if not damaged
Preparation
- Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts
- Allow engine to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated
- Position seat fully rearward for better access to lower dash area
- Gather all tools and prepare workspace with adequate lighting
Procedure
- 1Remove control knobsPull each HVAC control knob straight off the panel shafts. These are friction-fit. If stuck, gently work a flathead screwdriver behind the knob while pulling. Remove the fan speed rotary switch knob by pulling firmly.
- 2Remove instrument panel bezelRemove the screws securing the instrument cluster bezel surrounding the HVAC controls. On the 1970 Rebel, there are typically four Phillips screws along the top edge and two at the bottom. Carefully pull the bezel forward to disengage the retaining clips.
- 3Access control panel mounting screwsWith the bezel removed, locate the four mounting screws securing the HVAC control panel to the dash structure. These are typically Phillips head screws at the corners of the panel frame. Remove all mounting screws and set aside.
- 4Pull control panel forwardCarefully pull the control panel assembly forward approximately 3-4 inches to access the rear connections. Support the panel to prevent strain on attached cables and wiring. Use a flashlight to illuminate the rear of the assembly.
- 5Disconnect electrical connectionsLocate and disconnect the electrical connector for the blower motor switch. This is typically a multi-pin connector on the right side of the panel. Also disconnect the illumination lamp socket by rotating counterclockwise and pulling out. Note wire routing for reinstallation.
- 6Disconnect vacuum linesIdentify the vacuum line harness connected to the mode selector valve on the control panel. Carefully pull each vacuum line straight off its nipple. Mark or photograph which color line connects to which port if not already color-coded for reassembly.
- 7Disconnect temperature control cableLocate the temperature blend door cable attached to the left side of the control panel. Use needle-nose pliers to compress the cable housing retaining clip and slide it out of its bracket. Disconnect the cable end from the control lever by unhooking it.
- 8Disconnect mode control cableLocate the mode control cable typically attached to the center or right side of the panel. Compress the cable housing retaining clip with needle-nose pliers and slide it from the bracket. Disconnect the cable end from its lever attachment point.
- 9Remove control panel assemblyWith all cables, vacuum lines, and electrical connections detached, carefully remove the HVAC control panel assembly from the dashboard. Inspect all mounting points and connection points for damage before installing replacement.
- 10Install replacement panelPosition the new or refurbished control panel into the dashboard opening. Ensure all cable and wire openings align properly before pushing fully into position.
- 11Reconnect control cablesAttach the temperature and mode control cables to their respective levers on the new panel. Ensure cable ends are fully seated on the lever pins. Snap the cable housing retaining clips into their brackets, ensuring the cables move smoothly through their full range without binding.
- 12Reconnect vacuum and electricalReconnect the vacuum line harness to the mode selector valve, matching colors to their original ports. Reconnect the blower motor switch electrical connector and insert the illumination lamp socket, rotating clockwise to lock.
- 13Secure and test panelInstall the four mounting screws to secure the control panel to the dash structure. Do not overtighten as this can crack the mounting tabs. Reconnect the battery and test all functions before reinstalling the bezel.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the instrument panel bezel by aligning retaining clips and pressing firmly into place
- Install and tighten all bezel mounting screws evenly
- Press control knobs onto their shafts until fully seated
- Verify all knobs rotate smoothly and return to their stops properly
Verification
- Test blower motor operation at all speed settings
- Verify temperature control moves smoothly from full cold to full hot with noticeable airflow temperature change
- Test all mode positions (defrost, vent, heat, bi-level if equipped) and verify proper airflow direction
- Check that panel illumination lights operate with headlight switch
- Listen for vacuum leaks (hissing sound) with engine running while changing modes
- Verify no rattles or loose components when operating controls
