This procedure replaces the brake light switch on a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, which activates the brake lights when the pedal is depressed.

Warnings

⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL: A malfunctioning brake light switch means drivers behind you cannot see when you are braking. Test brake lights thoroughly before returning vehicle to service.
⚠️Brake fluid is extremely corrosive to paint and can cause chemical burns. Keep away from painted surfaces and skin. Flush immediately with water if contact occurs.
Some brake fluid will drain from the switch mounting point. Have a container ready and plan to top off the master cylinder after installation.
Do not allow air to enter the brake system. If significant fluid loss occurs or brake pedal becomes spongy, the system must be bled.
ℹ️The brake light switch is located on the brake pedal support bracket under the dashboard, accessed from inside the vehicle.

Parts

  • Brake light switch × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • DOT 4 Brake Fluid — 0.25 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake firmly
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove key
  3. Open driver's door and ensure interior dome light is functioning for adequate lighting
  4. Place a protective cloth or cardboard on the driver's seat to protect from brake fluid drips
  5. Position shop light or flashlight to illuminate the brake pedal area under the dashboard
  6. Locate the brake light switch on the brake pedal support bracket (mounted above the brake pedal arm with electrical connector and hydraulic lines)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the brake light switch body. Pull the connector straight off the switch terminals. On 1966 Corvettes, this is typically a two-wire push-on connector. Note which terminal connects to which wire color for reassembly (typically one white wire and one green wire).
  2. 2
    Position fluid catch container
Place a small container or rag directly beneath the brake light switch to catch brake fluid that will drain when the switch is removed. Position it carefully as fluid will begin draining immediately upon loosening.
  3. 3
    Remove brake light switch
Using an adjustable wrench or 9/16" wrench, grasp the hexagonal body of the brake light switch. Unscrew the switch counterclockwise from the mounting bracket. Work quickly once loosened to minimize fluid loss. Remove the switch completely and immediately proceed to the next step.
  4. 4
    Install new brake light switch
Quickly thread the new brake light switch into the mounting bracket by hand, turning clockwise. Once hand-tight, use the wrench to snug the switch securely into the bracket. Do not overtighten as the brass threads can strip. The switch body should be firmly seated against the bracket with minimal fluid seepage.
  5. 5
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the new switch terminals, ensuring both terminals are fully engaged. Match the wire colors to the correct terminals as noted during removal (white and green wires).
  6. 6
    Check and refill master cylinder
Open the hood and locate the brake master cylinder reservoir. Remove the cap and check the fluid level. Add DOT 4 brake fluid to bring the level to the FULL mark. Wipe up any spilled fluid immediately. Replace the cap securely.
  7. 7
    Adjust brake light switch
The switch activates when the brake pedal is released to its rest position. With the pedal at rest, the plunger on the switch should be compressed approximately 1/16" to 1/8". If adjustment is needed, loosen the switch slightly and thread it in or out until proper engagement is achieved, then retighten.

Reassembly

  1. Clean any brake fluid residue from the pedal bracket, carpet, or seat with clean rags and water
  2. Ensure the master cylinder cap is properly secured
  3. Remove protective cloths from the driver's seat

Verification

  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (engine does not need to run)
  • Have an assistant observe the rear brake lights or use a mirror to view them yourself
  • Press the brake pedal slowly and verify BOTH brake lights illuminate immediately
  • Release the pedal and verify both brake lights extinguish completely
  • Repeat this test 5-6 times to ensure consistent operation
  • Check for brake fluid leaks around the switch body with the pedal both pressed and released
  • Press the brake pedal firmly and hold for 30 seconds to verify it remains firm (no air in system)
  • Test drive the vehicle in a safe area and verify brake lights function normally during actual braking
  • Have another driver follow you to confirm brake lights are visible and functioning before normal operation
