This procedure covers the replacement of the main relay (underhood fuse box relay) in a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 engine.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require relearning procedures for power windows and other systems
ℹ️The main relay controls power distribution to multiple circuits. Ensure the ignition is off and the vehicle has been sitting for at least 5 minutes before beginning work

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate the underhood fuse block on the driver side of the engine compartment near the battery
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove underhood fuse block coverLocate the tabs on the sides of the underhood fuse block cover. Press the release tabs inward and lift the cover straight up to remove. Set the cover aside in a clean location with the relay diagram facing up for reference.
- 3Identify the main relay locationUsing the relay diagram on the fuse block cover, identify the main relay position. The main relay is typically labeled as 'RLY-MAIN' or similar designation. Common locations are in the upper section of the fuse block. Note the relay orientation before removal.
- 4Remove the old main relayGrasp the relay firmly and pull straight up with steady pressure to remove it from the socket. If the relay is difficult to remove, use needle nose pliers to grip the relay body (not the terminals) and pull straight up. Inspect the relay socket terminals for corrosion, burns, or damage.⚠Do not rock the relay side to side as this can damage the socket terminals
- 5Inspect and clean relay socketVisually inspect the relay socket for signs of heat damage, corrosion, or bent terminals. If corrosion is present, spray electrical contact cleaner into the socket and allow to dry completely. If terminals are damaged, the entire fuse block may require replacement.
- 6Install new main relayApply a small amount of dielectric grease to the relay terminals. Align the new relay with the socket, ensuring proper orientation matches the original relay position. Press the relay firmly into the socket until it is fully seated and flush with surrounding relays.⚠Ensure relay orientation is correct - forcing a relay in backwards can damage both the relay and the fuse block
- 7Reinstall fuse block coverPosition the fuse block cover over the fuse block, aligning the cover tabs with the fuse block slots. Press down firmly on all corners of the cover until the tabs click into place and the cover is secure.
- 8Reconnect battery negative terminalClean the battery post and cable terminal with a wire brush if corrosion is present. Place the negative cable onto the negative battery post and tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench.ℹ️Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this can crack the terminal or damage the battery postTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify the fuse block cover is properly secured with all tabs engaged
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in the engine compartment
- Reset clock, radio presets, and perform power window relearn if necessary
Verification
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine) and verify the instrument cluster illuminates normally
- Check that all dashboard warning lights perform their normal self-test sequence
- Start the engine and verify it starts normally without hesitation
- Turn on headlights, radio, and climate control to verify all electrical systems are functioning
- If any warning lights remain illuminated or systems do not function, turn off the engine and recheck relay installation and orientation
- Test drive the vehicle briefly to confirm all systems operate normally under load
