Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable
- Drain engine coolant into appropriate container
- Drain engine oil and remove oil filter
- Remove engine cover and air intake assembly
- Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump fuse and cranking engine until it stalls
- Label and disconnect all vacuum lines, electrical connectors, and fuel lines
- Remove radiator, cooling fans, and all coolant hoses
- Remove serpentine belt and all accessory drive components (alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump)
- Remove exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters
- Remove transmission (or support transmission and remove bellhousing bolts if removing engine)
- Attach engine hoist to factory lifting points and support engine weight
- Remove engine mount bolts and carefully lift engine from vehicle
- Mount engine securely on engine stand
- Rotate engine to convenient working position on stand
Procedure
- 1Remove intake manifold and valve train componentsRemove throttle body and fuel rail assembly. Remove intake manifold bolts and lift off intake manifold. Remove ignition coils and spark plugs from all cylinders. Remove valve covers from both cylinder heads. Remove rocker arm assemblies by removing bolts and carefully lifting off rocker arm shafts. Keep all components organized by cylinder. Remove pushrods and store in order.

Calculate taper and out-of-round for each cylinder. Maximum allowable taper is 0.002 inch; out-of-round maximum is 0.002 inch. If any cylinder exceeds these specifications, cylinder boring and oversized pistons are required. Consult service manual for bore specifications.
- 6Remove pistons and connecting rod assembliesRotate crankshaft to position piston at bottom dead center. Mark connecting rod caps and rods with cylinder number using permanent marker or scribe. Remove connecting rod cap bolts and remove caps, keeping caps with their respective rods. Push piston and rod assembly up and out of cylinder bore. Install connecting rod cap back on rod loosely to prevent mixing. Repeat for all 8 cylinders. Inspect each connecting rod for damage, bending, or twisting.
- 7Remove old piston ringsUsing piston ring removal tool or carefully by hand, remove all three rings from each piston (two compression rings and one oil control ring). Start at the ring gap and work around carefully to avoid breaking rings into piston ring grooves. Inspect pistons for cracks, scuffing, or damage. Clean piston ring grooves thoroughly using broken ring segment or groove cleaning tool. Ensure grooves are completely clean and free of carbon deposits.
- 8Deglaze cylinders and final preparationUsing cylinder hone with 220-280 grit stones, deglaze each cylinder bore using proper honing oil. Create 45-degree crosshatch pattern. Hone only enough to break the glaze (typically 10-15 strokes). After honing, thoroughly clean cylinders with hot soapy water and brush, then wipe with clean lint-free cloths soaked in engine oil. Repeat cleaning until cloth comes out clean. Apply light coat of assembly lube to cylinder walls.
- 9Measure and install piston ringsFor each cylinder, insert each new ring (top compression, second compression, oil control) into the cylinder bore and push down with inverted piston to square the ring. Measure ring end gap using feeler gauge at multiple positions. Consult service manual for gap specifications (typically 0.009-0.015 inch for compression rings, 0.010-0.030 inch for oil rings). If gap is too tight, carefully file ring ends square until gap is within specification. Using piston ring installation tool, install oil control ring first (expander and rails), then second compression ring, then top compression ring. Ensure all rings rotate freely in their grooves and gaps are properly staggered (120 degrees apart). Ring gaps should NOT align with piston pin. Install rings on all 8 pistons.
- 10Install piston and rod assemblies into cylindersCoat each piston, rings, and cylinder wall generously with assembly lube. Ensure piston ring gaps are staggered properly. Install ring compressor tool over piston rings and tighten until rings are fully compressed into piston grooves. Position piston in correct cylinder with front mark facing forward. Guide connecting rod into cylinder bore. Using wooden hammer handle, gently tap piston crown while guiding rod onto crankshaft journal until piston fully enters cylinder. Remove ring compressor. - Install new oil filter and fill engine with 8.5 quarts of ACDelco dexos1 0W-20 oil
- Install oil drain plug with new crush washer and torque to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- Fill cooling system with 18 quarts of ACDelco DEX-COOL coolant and bleed air from system
- Reconnect negative battery cable
Verification
- Before starting engine, rotate crankshaft by hand at least two full revolutions to verify no binding or resistance
- Prime oil system by cranking engine with fuel pump fuse removed and spark plugs removed until oil pressure gauge shows pressure
- Install spark plugs and fuel pump fuse, then start engine and verify oil pressure immediately
- Listen for unusual noises during initial startup (knocking, ticking, or grinding indicates a problem - shut down immediately)
- Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature while monitoring for leaks (oil, coolant, fuel)
- Check for coolant leaks around cylinder heads and intake manifold
- Check for oil leaks at oil pan, timing cover, and valve covers
