This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the exhaust resonator on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 engine.
Warnings

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow exhaust system to cool completely (minimum 2 hours after last operation)
- Raise vehicle using floor jack at factory lift points
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight (minimum 6,000 lbs capacity)
- Spray all exhaust clamps, flange bolts, and hanger bolts with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 15 minutes
Procedure
- 1Locate and inspect resonatorPosition yourself under the vehicle and locate the resonator assembly. It is positioned in the mid-section of the exhaust between the catalytic converters and the muffler. Inspect the condition of the flanges, clamps, and rubber hangers to determine the disconnection points needed.
- 2Support the resonatorPlace a floor jack or suitable support under the resonator assembly to prevent it from falling when disconnected. Position the jack to support the weight but not apply upward pressure on the exhaust system.
- 3Remove forward flange connectionUsing a 15mm socket, remove the two or three bolts connecting the resonator inlet flange to the forward exhaust pipe (from catalytic converter). Apply even pressure when loosening to avoid breaking corroded studs. If bolts break, mark for stud extraction after resonator removal. - 5Disconnect exhaust hangersThe resonator is supported by rubber exhaust hangers. Using an exhaust hanger removal tool or pry bar, carefully work the metal hanger loops out of the rubber isolators. Apply steady pressure to avoid tearing the rubber. There are typically two hanger points on the resonator assembly. Lower the support jack slightly as hangers are disconnected.⚠Exhaust hangers are under tension. Control the resonator as hangers release to prevent it from falling.
- 6Remove resonator assemblyWith all connections and hangers disconnected, carefully lower the resonator assembly using the support jack. Maneuver it out from under the vehicle, being careful not to damage brake lines, fuel lines, or wiring that may be nearby.
- 7Clean connection surfacesUsing a wire brush, clean the flange surfaces on both the forward pipe and rear pipe connections. Remove all old gasket material, rust, and carbon buildup to ensure a proper seal. Inspect flange surfaces for warping or damage that could cause exhaust leaks.
- 8Inspect and prepare rubber hangersInspect all rubber exhaust hangers for cracks, tears, or deterioration. Replace any damaged hangers. Apply a small amount of liquid soap or silicone spray to the inside of the rubber isolators to ease installation of the new resonator.
- 9Position new resonatorPlace the new resonator on the support jack and raise into approximate position under the vehicle. Align the resonator so that hanger loops and flange connections can be made without forcing components.
- 10Install exhaust hangersConnect the metal hanger loops on the resonator to the rubber isolators on the vehicle. Use a pry bar or hanger tool to stretch the rubber as needed. Ensure hangers are fully seated and the resonator is properly supported before proceeding.
- 11Install forward flange connectionPosition a new exhaust flange gasket between the resonator inlet and the forward pipe. Align the flange bolt holes and start all bolts by hand. - 13Verify alignment and clearanceWith all connections tightened, visually inspect the entire exhaust system to ensure proper alignment. Verify there is adequate clearance between the exhaust and the driveshaft, frame, fuel tank, brake lines, and floor pan. Minimum clearance should be 25mm (1 inch) at all points. Adjust hanger positions if needed to achieve proper clearance.
Reassembly
- Double-check all flange bolts and clamps are torqued to specification
- Ensure all exhaust hangers are fully engaged in rubber isolators
- Remove support jack from under exhaust system
- Verify no tools or parts were left under vehicle
Verification
- Start the engine and listen for exhaust leaks at all connection points (hissing or ticking sounds indicate leaks)
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify no leaks develop as components expand
- Perform a visual inspection under the vehicle while engine is running to check for unusual movement or contact points
- Test drive the vehicle and listen for rattles, buzzing, or exhaust noise that would indicate improper installation
