Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground (do not remove)
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack at designated lift point
- Support vehicle with jack stands under frame rails
- Remove wheel completely
- Spray ball joint nut and upper control arm bolts with penetrating oil and allow to soak
Procedure
- 1Remove wheel and access upper ball jointWith vehicle raised and supported, remove the wheel completely. Turn steering wheel to full lock position opposite the side being worked on to improve access to upper ball joint area.
- 2Remove brake caliper and ABS sensor wireRemove the brake caliper mounting bolts and secure caliper to frame using wire or bungee cord without stressing brake hose. If present, disconnect ABS wheel speed sensor wire from upper control arm to prevent damage during disassembly.⚠Never let brake caliper hang by the brake hose. This can damage the hose internally.
- 3Remove upper ball joint cotter pin and nutUse needle nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the ball joint castle nut. Remove the castle nut from the upper ball joint stud using appropriate socket. Do not reuse the cotter pin.
- 4Separate ball joint from steering knuckleUse a ball joint separator tool or pickle fork to separate the upper ball joint stud from the steering knuckle. Position the separator between the knuckle and upper control arm, then strike with hammer or tighten separator tool until joint releases. Support the knuckle and brake assembly to prevent it from dropping when separated.⚠Pickle fork method will damage ball joint boot. Only use if replacing ball joint.
- 5Access upper ball joint mountingWith ball joint stud separated from knuckle, push the knuckle assembly downward to create clearance. The upper ball joint is pressed into the upper control arm. Clean the area around the ball joint with wire brush to remove dirt and corrosion.
- 6Remove old ball joint from control armUsing a ball joint press kit with appropriate adapters, press the old ball joint out of the upper control arm. Position the receiver cup on the underside of the control arm and press the ball joint upward and out. If using C-clamp method, ensure proper support and alignment to avoid damaging control arm.⚠Ensure press adapters are properly seated to prevent slipping during pressing operation.
- 7Clean control arm boreThoroughly clean the ball joint bore in the upper control arm using wire brush. Remove all rust, dirt, and old residue. Inspect bore for damage, cracks, or elongation. Replace control arm if bore is damaged.
- 8Install new upper ball jointPosition new ball joint in control arm bore with stud facing downward. Using ball joint press kit, press the new ball joint into the control arm until fully seated. The ball joint should be pressed in squarely and completely seated against the control arm shoulder. Verify the ball joint snap ring (if equipped) is properly engaged.ℹ️Some replacement ball joints include a snap ring that must be installed in the groove after pressing. - 9Reconnect ball joint to steering knuckleGuide the upper ball joint stud through the hole in the steering knuckle. Use a pry bar if necessary to align the knuckle with the ball joint stud. - 10Install new cotter pinInstall a new cotter pin through the castle nut and ball joint stud. If the cotter pin holes do not align, tighten the nut slightly (never loosen) until the next slot aligns with the hole. Bend the cotter pin legs to secure, with one leg bent up and one bent down or both bent down around the nut.⚠Never loosen castle nut to align cotter pin hole. Only tighten to next alignment position.
- 11Reinstall brake caliper and ABS sensorRemove wire or bungee cord supporting brake caliper. Reinstall caliper to mounting bracket and torque bolts to specification. Reconnect ABS wheel speed sensor wire to upper control arm clips if previously removed.
- 12Reinstall wheel and lower vehicleInstall wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts in star pattern. Lower vehicle until tire just touches ground but vehicle weight is not fully on wheels. Reassembly
