This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the climate control module (HVAC control head) located in the center of the dashboard on 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trucks.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require radio anti-theft code re-entry.
ℹ️The climate control module retains user settings. After replacement, climate control settings will need to be reconfigured.
Trim panels and clips can break easily. Use proper trim removal tools and apply even pressure when removing panels.

Tools required

T15 Torx driverEssential
Flathead screwdriver (for clips)
Magnetic parts tray
Work light or flashlight

Parts

  • Climate control module assembly × 1 — GM Part# 23479828 or equivalent
  • Trim panel retaining clips (assorted) × 1 — Replace any broken clips

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  4. Set climate control to OFF position before beginning work
  5. Gather all necessary tools and replacement parts

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove center console trim bezel
Using trim removal tools, carefully pry the center console trim bezel surrounding the climate control module. Start at the bottom edge and work your way around. There are 8 retaining clips holding the bezel in place. Pull the bezel straight back once all clips are released.
  2. 2
    Disconnect auxiliary power outlet
Once the bezel is loose, reach behind and disconnect the electrical connector for the 12V auxiliary power outlet (if equipped). Press the tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Set the bezel aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
Remove climate control module mounting screws
Locate and remove the four T15 Torx screws securing the climate control module to the dashboard support bracket. These screws are located at each corner of the module. Keep screws organized for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Pull climate control module forward
Carefully pull the climate control module straight forward out of the dashboard cavity approximately 3-4 inches. Do not pull too far or force it, as electrical connectors and vacuum lines are still attached to the rear.
  5. 5
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the two main electrical connectors on the rear of the climate control module. Press the locking tabs on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Note the orientation and position of each connector for proper reconnection. One connector is for power and controls, the other is for the temperature display.
  6. 6
    Disconnect vacuum line (if equipped)
If the vehicle is equipped with dual-zone climate control, disconnect the vacuum line from the rear of the module. Press the release collar on the quick-connect fitting and pull the line straight back. Inspect the vacuum line for cracks or damage.
  7. 7
    Remove old climate control module
With all connections disconnected, carefully remove the climate control module from the dashboard cavity. Inspect the mounting bracket and trim opening for any damage or debris.
  8. 8
    Prepare new climate control module
Remove the new climate control module from packaging. Transfer any necessary components from the old module if required (verify with parts supplier). Inspect all mounting points and connector ports on the new module.
  9. 9
Connect vacuum line to new module
If equipped with dual-zone climate control, connect the vacuum line to the new module. Push the line into the quick-connect fitting until it clicks into place. Tug gently to verify proper connection.
  10. 10
    Connect electrical connectors
Connect both electrical connectors to the rear of the new climate control module. Ensure each connector is fully seated and the locking tabs click into place. The connectors are keyed and will only fit in the correct orientation.
  11. 11
    Install new climate control module
Carefully push the new climate control module into the dashboard cavity, ensuring all wiring and vacuum lines are routed properly behind the module and not pinched. Align the module with the mounting bracket holes.
  12. 12
    Secure climate control module
Install the four T15 Torx mounting screws at each corner of the climate control module. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Screws should be snug but do not overtighten as the module housing is plastic.
  13. 13
    Reinstall center console trim bezel
Reconnect the auxiliary power outlet electrical connector (if equipped). Align the trim bezel with the dashboard opening and verify all 8 retaining clips are properly positioned. Press firmly around all edges until all clips snap into place. Verify the bezel is flush and secure around all edges.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all trim panels are properly secured and flush with surrounding surfaces
  2. Ensure no gaps exist between the climate control module face and trim bezel
  3. Check that all retaining clips engaged properly during reassembly

Verification

  • Reconnect negative battery cable
  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify climate control module display illuminates
  • Test all fan speed settings from low to high and verify blower motor responds
  • Test temperature control in both heating and cooling directions
  • Verify air distribution controls (defrost, floor, vent, bi-level) all function properly
  • Test recirculation and fresh air mode operation
  • If equipped with dual-zone climate control, verify both driver and passenger controls function independently
  • Turn on air conditioning and verify AC compressor engages and cold air is produced
  • Test defrost mode and verify air flows to windshield vents
  • Check for any warning lights or error messages on instrument cluster
  • Verify all climate control settings can be adjusted and retained
