This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the engine coolant temperature sensor on the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 L83 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
⚠Do not mix different types of coolant. Only use DEX-COOL (orange) coolant in this vehicle.
ℹ️The coolant temperature sensor is located on the driver's side cylinder head near the rear, just forward of the firewall.
Tools required
19mm deep socketEssential
3/8" ratchetEssential
Drain pan (minimum 2 gallon capacity)Essential
Small pick or scraper
Clean shop towelsEssential
Torque wrench (0-50 Nm range)
Parts
- Engine coolant temperature sensor × 1 — ACDelco 213-4514 or equivalent
- Coolant (for top-off) × 1 — ACDelco DEX-COOL
Fluids
- ACDelco DEX-COOL (Orange) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Open hood and locate the coolant temperature sensor on the driver's side cylinder head near the rear
- Place drain pan beneath the sensor location to catch coolant during removal
Procedure
- 1Relieve cooling system pressureSlowly rotate the radiator cap counterclockwise to the first stop to relieve any residual pressure in the cooling system. Wait for any hissing to stop, then remove the cap completely.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the coolant temperature sensor. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the sensor. If necessary, use a small pick to release the lock tab while gently pulling the connector.
- 3Remove coolant temperature sensorUsing a 19mm deep socket and ratchet, carefully loosen the coolant temperature sensor by turning counterclockwise. Be prepared for coolant to drain out as the sensor is removed. Once loose, remove the sensor by hand and allow coolant to drain into the pan.
- 4Inspect sensor boreExamine the sensor mounting bore in the cylinder head for debris, old sealant, or thread damage. Clean the threads with a shop towel if necessary. The sensor uses a conical seat and does not require additional sealant or thread tape.
- 5Install new sensorThread the new coolant temperature sensor into the cylinder head by hand until it seats. Ensure it threads smoothly without cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use the 19mm socket and ratchet to snug the sensor. Tighten to approximately 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) - firm but not excessive force. Do not overtighten as this can damage the sensor or cylinder head threads.
- 6Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector onto the new sensor until you hear and feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked.
- 7Refill cooling systemAdd DEX-COOL coolant through the radiator fill neck to bring the level back to the proper level. Start with approximately 1 quart, then check the level. The radiator should be full to the base of the fill neck when cold.
- 8Bleed cooling systemInstall the radiator cap and start the engine. Allow it to run until the thermostat opens and the upper radiator hose becomes hot. Monitor the temperature gauge to ensure normal operating temperature is reached. Turn off the engine and allow to cool slightly, then recheck coolant level and top off if necessary.
Reassembly
- Ensure all coolant spills are cleaned from engine and components to prevent corrosion
- Inspect the area around the sensor for any signs of coolant leaks after initial warm-up cycle
Verification
- Start the engine and verify the temperature gauge operates normally and reaches normal operating temperature
- Check for coolant leaks around the sensor with engine at operating temperature
- Use a scan tool to verify the ECM is receiving proper temperature readings from the new sensor (typically 180-220°F at operating temperature)
- Verify no check engine light or temperature-related diagnostic trouble codes are present
- Recheck coolant level after the first drive cycle and top off if needed
