Complete removal and reinstallation of the 5.3L L83 EcoTec3 V8 engine from a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RWD, including disconnection of all engine systems and separation from transmission.
Warnings
⚠️Fuel system is under pressure. Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting fuel lines to prevent fire hazard and injury.
⚠️Engine weight exceeds 400 lbs. Use properly rated engine hoist and ensure all chains/straps are secure before lifting. Crushing hazard.
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting removal. Coolant system operates at high temperature and pressure.
⚠Mark all electrical connectors and vacuum lines before disconnection to ensure proper reassembly.
ℹ️This procedure requires transmission support but does not require complete transmission removal.

Preparation
- Position vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable, then positive cable, and remove battery from vehicle
- Remove engine cover and intake air duct assembly
- Drain engine coolant completely into appropriate container by opening radiator petcock and removing upper radiator hose
- Drain engine oil and remove oil filter
- Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump fuse and cranking engine until it stalls
- Raise vehicle on lift or support securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Remove front skid plate if equipped
- Label all electrical connectors, vacuum lines, and hose connections with wire tags for reassembly reference
Procedure
- 1Disconnect fuel and EVAP systemsDisconnect fuel feed and return lines at the fuel rail using appropriate fuel line disconnect tools. Disconnect EVAP purge line and canister vent solenoid. Cap all open fuel lines to prevent contamination.
- 2Remove radiator and cooling system componentsDisconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine. Remove radiator fan shroud assembly (electric fans unbolt with shroud as assembly). Disconnect transmission cooler lines from radiator. Remove radiator mounting bolts and lift radiator out of vehicle. Disconnect heater hoses at firewall and engine.
- 3Disconnect engine electrical systemsDisconnect engine wiring harness at all major connectors: both O2 sensor connectors, knock sensors, oil pressure sender, coolant temperature sensor, MAF sensor, throttle body connector, fuel injector harness, ignition coil connectors, alternator connections, and starter connections. Unbolt main engine harness grounds from block and position harness away from engine.Torque specElectrical Connector Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 4Remove accessory drive systemUsing belt tensioner tool or 15mm wrench on tensioner pulley bolt, release tension and remove serpentine belt. Remove AC compressor mounting bolts and position compressor aside without disconnecting refrigerant lines (support with wire). Remove power steering pump mounting bolts and position pump aside without disconnecting lines. Remove alternator mounting bolts and remove alternator from vehicle.Torque specAC Compressor Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)Power Steering Pump Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)Alternator Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 5Disconnect exhaust systemFrom underneath vehicle, disconnect exhaust pipes from both exhaust manifolds at flange connections. Remove oxygen sensors if they will interfere with manifold removal. Support exhaust system with jack or wire to prevent damage. If needed, remove exhaust manifold heat shields.⚠Exhaust fasteners are prone to corrosion. Apply penetrating oil and allow to soak. Heat may be required for seized fasteners.Torque specExhaust Manifold Nuts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 6Remove intake manifold and throttle bodyDisconnect throttle body and all vacuum lines from intake manifold. Remove brake booster vacuum line. Unbolt intake manifold (8 bolts) and remove from engine along with fuel rail assembly. Disconnect PCV hose and remove valley cover if necessary for engine lifting clearance.
- 7Separate transmission from engineFrom underneath vehicle, place transmission jack under transmission pan with wood block for protection. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts (typically 6-8 bolts around bellhousing perimeter). Do not remove transmission crossmember mount yet. Remove starter motor mounting bolts and lower starter from vehicle. Mark flexplate-to-torque converter relationship, then remove torque converter bolts (access through starter opening while rotating engine). Push torque converter back into transmission and secure with safety wire or retaining strap.⚠Ensure transmission jack is securely positioned before removing bellhousing bolts. Transmission weight is approximately 200 lbs.Torque specTransmission-to-Engine Bolts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)Mounting Bolts60 Nm (44 lb-ft)
- 8Disconnect remaining engine connectionsRemove throttle cable bracket if equipped. Disconnect any remaining vacuum lines, breather hoses, and ground straps. Remove transmission dipstick tube from engine if mounted to block. Double-check that all hoses, wires, and mechanical connections are free from engine.
- 9Attach engine hoist and remove mountsInstall engine leveler on hoist and attach lifting chains to factory lifting brackets on cylinder heads (one on each side of engine). Take up slack in hoist to support engine weight but do not lift yet. Remove engine mount-to-frame bolts on both driver and passenger sides. Remove engine mount-to-block bolts and lift mounts away from engine.⚠️Verify hoist chains are secure and rated for load before removing mount bolts. Engine will shift when mounts are disconnected.Torque specEngine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)Engine Mount-to-Block Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)
- 10Lift engine from vehicleSlowly raise engine with hoist while adjusting engine leveler to keep engine level. Lift engine approximately 2 inches and verify all connections are clear. Continue lifting while tilting rear of engine up slightly to clear transmission input shaft and bellhousing. Guide engine forward and up, watching clearance at firewall, AC lines, and brake booster. Once clear of engine bay, lower onto engine stand or suitable work surface.⚠️Have assistant guide engine during removal. Watch for pinch points and ensure no hoses or wires are still attached.
Reassembly
- Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly before reassembly, especially intake manifold and exhaust manifold surfaces
- Install new exhaust manifold gaskets and apply anti-seize to exhaust studs per torque specifications
- Verify transmission alignment dowel pins are present and in good condition before mating engine to transmission
- When lowering engine into bay, align engine mounts before fully seating engine to bellhousing
- Torque all fasteners in reverse order of removal, following specified patterns for critical fasteners like flywheel bolts
- Install new oil filter and fill engine with specified oil quantity before first start
- Refill cooling system with proper DEX-COOL coolant and bleed air from system
- Double-check all electrical connectors are fully seated and all grounds are properly torqued
- Verify serpentine belt is properly routed before tensioning
Verification
- Verify all torque specifications have been met using torque wrench, especially engine mounts, transmission bolts, and flywheel bolts
- Check that all electrical connectors are secured and match original positions from labeling
- Verify all fluid levels are correct: engine oil, coolant, power steering, transmission
- Reconnect battery and check for stored diagnostic codes before starting
- Start engine and verify no leaks from coolant, oil, fuel, or exhaust systems
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify cooling fans cycle properly
- Check transmission engagement in all gears and verify proper shift operation
- Perform test drive and monitor engine temperature, oil pressure, and overall operation
- Recheck all fluid levels after test drive and top off as necessary
- Inspect underneath vehicle for any fluid leaks or loose components after test drive
