This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the headlight switch assembly located in the instrument panel of a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Warnings

Disconnect the battery negative terminal and wait at least 2 minutes before beginning work to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge.
ℹ️The instrument panel trim pieces are plastic and can crack if excessive force is applied. Use proper trim removal tools.
ℹ️Mark or photograph electrical connector orientations before disconnection to ensure proper reassembly.

Parts

  • Headlight switch assembly × 1 — GM 22864447 or equivalent
  • Instrument panel trim clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key.
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post.
  4. Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge.
  5. Adjust steering wheel to lowest position for better access to instrument panel trim.
  6. Open driver's door fully to provide working clearance.

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove lower instrument panel trim panel
Locate the lower left instrument panel trim panel below the steering column. Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully release the retaining clips starting from the outer edge and working inward. Pull the panel away from the dash and set aside. There are typically 6-8 clips securing this panel.
  2. 2
    Remove instrument cluster bezel
Locate and remove the two 7mm screws at the top of the instrument cluster bezel (above the gauge cluster). Grasp the bezel firmly and pull straight back to release the retaining clips along the bottom and sides. Carefully pull the bezel away from the instrument panel far enough to access the back side.
  3. 3
Disconnect climate control connectors (if equipped)
If the bezel includes integrated climate controls, press the locking tabs on the electrical connectors at the rear of the climate control module and disconnect them. Support the bezel to prevent strain on any remaining connected wires.
  4. 4
    Access headlight switch mounting
With the bezel removed or pulled forward, locate the headlight switch assembly on the left side of the instrument panel. The switch is mounted from behind the panel. Use a flashlight to identify the two mounting screws and electrical connector.
  5. 5
    Disconnect headlight switch electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the back of the headlight switch. Press the locking tab (typically red or gray) while pulling the connector straight back away from the switch. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself.
  6. 6
    Remove headlight switch mounting screws
Using a 7mm socket and short extension, remove the two screws securing the headlight switch to the instrument panel bracket. Support the switch as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.
  7. 7
    Remove headlight switch assembly
Carefully pull the headlight switch assembly forward and out through the opening in the instrument panel. Note the orientation and position of any mounting tabs or guides for installation of the new switch.
  8. 8
    Install new headlight switch
Position the new headlight switch assembly into the instrument panel opening, aligning any mounting tabs or guides with their corresponding slots in the bracket. Insert the switch until it is flush with the mounting surface.
  9. 9
    Install headlight switch mounting screws
Install the two 7mm mounting screws and tighten to secure the switch to the bracket. Do not overtighten as the switch housing is plastic. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern.
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the terminals on the back of the headlight switch. Push the connector firmly onto the switch until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated.
  11. 11
    Reinstall instrument cluster bezel
If climate control connectors were disconnected, reconnect them first. Align the bezel with the instrument panel opening and press firmly around all edges to seat the retaining clips. Install the two 7mm screws at the top of the bezel and tighten securely.
  12. 12
    Reinstall lower instrument panel trim
Position the lower trim panel and align all mounting clip locations. Press firmly on each clip location until all clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with the surrounding dash surfaces.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery and test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off) and test all headlight switch functions including parking lights, headlights, and dimmer control to verify proper operation.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment before final testing.
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully locked in place.
  3. Check that the headlight switch knob operates smoothly through all positions without binding.
  4. Confirm no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster after battery reconnection.

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and rotate headlight switch through all positions: OFF, parking lights, and headlights. Verify each position functions correctly.
  • Test the instrument panel dimmer function by rotating the dimmer wheel on the headlight switch to confirm gauge cluster brightness adjusts properly.
  • Verify dome light control (if integrated in switch) operates correctly.
  • Confirm no dashboard warning lights related to lighting systems are illuminated.
  • Check that all instrument panel trim pieces are secure with no rattles or loose clips.
  • Test automatic headlight function (if equipped) by starting vehicle and confirming AUTO mode works properly.
