Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake

    Disconnect throttle body electrical connector and all fuel injector connectors. Remove fuel rail bolts and carefully lift fuel rail with injectors attached, securing it aside. Disconnect MAP sensor, EVAP purge solenoid, and any remaining electrical connectors. Remove intake manifold bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (outside to inside pattern). Carefully lift intake manifold straight up and off the engine. Small amount of coolant will drain from ports. Stuff clean shop towels into intake ports to prevent debris entry.

    Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectors on the affected bank. Remove ignition coils by removing mounting bolts and pulling straight up with slight twisting motion. Clean all old gasket material from valve cover and cylinder head mating surfaces using plastic scraper.

    Before removing any rocker arms, rotate engine clockwise (viewed from front) until the camshaft lobe for the affected cylinder is pointing away from the rocker arm (base circle position). This is critical - the cam lobe must NOT be pressing on the rocker arm when you remove it. You can rotate engine using a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt. Mark the position if needed for reference.

    Remove rocker arm and pushrod
    With cam lobe on base circle, remove the single rocker arm bolt for the affected valve (intake or exhaust corresponding to failed lifter). Lift rocker arm straight up and off the cylinder head. Remove pushrod by pulling straight up - it should slide out easily. Inspect pushrod by rolling on flat surface - if bent even slightly, it must be replaced. Mark pushrod location if reusing. Stand pushrod upright in clean area to prevent dirt contamination.

    Extract failed lifter
    Look down through the pushrod hole to locate the lifter. Use lifter removal tool or strong telescoping magnet to grasp lifter body. Pull straight up firmly - lifter may be stuck due to varnish buildup. If stuck, apply penetrating oil around lifter and wait 15 minutes, then try again with rotating motion while pulling. Do NOT pry or use excessive force that could damage lifter bore. Once free, lift lifter completely out of the bore.

    Clean lifter bore thoroughly with clean shop towel wrapped around wooden dowel or similar tool. Inspect bore for scoring, debris, or damage. Any significant scoring requires professional machining. Wipe bore with lint-free towel. Inspect new lifter - it should have protective oil coating. Coat new lifter generously with fresh engine oil, especially the bottom surface that contacts the camshaft. Prime lifter by submerging in engine oil and working plunger up and down at least 10 times until resistance is felt.

    With lifter fully primed and coated in oil, carefully lower it into the lifter bore. Ensure lifter slides in straight - do not force or cock at angle. Lifter should drop to bottom of bore with minimal resistance. Rotate lifter to ensure it moves freely in the bore. If binding occurs, remove and inspect for debris or damage.

Verify cam lobe is still on base circle (not pressing up). Place rocker arm over stud and onto pushrod, ensuring pushrod tip is properly seated in rocker arm socket. Install rocker arm bolt finger-tight initially.
