This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 L83 engine.
Warnings
⚠Do not touch the sensing elements inside the MAF sensor with your fingers or tools as contamination or damage will cause inaccurate readings and driveability issues
ℹ️The MAF sensor is a sensitive component. Handle carefully and avoid dropping or impacting the sensor
ℹ️Ensure the engine is completely cool before beginning work to avoid burns from intake components
Tools required
Torx T20 driver or screwdriverEssential
Small flathead screwdriver or pick tool
Torque wrench (0-10 Nm range)Essential
Clean microfiber cloth
MAF sensor cleaner (if cleaning old sensor)
Parts
- Mass Air Flow Sensor × 1 — AC Delco 213-4815 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
Procedure
- 1Locate the MAF sensorThe MAF sensor is located in the air intake tube between the air filter box and the throttle body on the driver side of the engine bay. It is a rectangular sensor housing integrated into the intake tube with an electrical connector on top.
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorPress down on the tab at the top of the electrical connector while pulling upward to disconnect it from the MAF sensor. The connector lock may be stiff on first removal. If needed, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently assist in releasing the locking tab, but do not pry directly on the connector body.
- 3Remove the MAF sensor mounting screwsUsing a Torx T20 driver, remove the two Torx screws securing the MAF sensor to the air intake tube. These screws are located on opposite sides of the sensor housing. Keep these screws in a safe location as they will be reused unless replacement screws are provided with the new sensor.Torque specMAF Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 4Remove the MAF sensor from intake tubeCarefully pull the MAF sensor straight out of the air intake tube. There may be a rubber seal or grommet that keeps tension on the sensor. Do not twist or bend the sensor during removal. Inspect the rubber seal for damage, cracks, or deterioration. If the seal is damaged, it must be replaced to prevent unmetered air from entering the intake system.
- 5Inspect the intake tube openingCheck the opening in the intake tube where the MAF sensor was installed for debris, dirt, or oil contamination. Wipe clean with a microfiber cloth if necessary. Do not allow any debris to fall into the intake tube toward the throttle body. If significant oil or contamination is present, this may indicate issues with the air filter or crankcase ventilation system that should be addressed.
- 6Prepare the new MAF sensorRemove the new MAF sensor from its packaging. Verify that the new sensor matches the old unit in connector type and mounting configuration. Check that the rubber seal is properly seated in the groove on the new sensor body. Do not remove any protective covers from the sensor inlet/outlet until ready to install.
- 7Install the new MAF sensorAlign the new MAF sensor with the opening in the air intake tube, ensuring the sensor is oriented correctly with the airflow direction arrow (if marked) pointing toward the throttle body. The screw holes must align with the threaded inserts in the intake tube. Carefully push the sensor straight into the tube until it is fully seated and flush with the tube surface.
- 8Install and torque the mounting screwsThread both Torx T20 screws into the MAF sensor by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Once both screws are started, use a torque wrench to tighten them in an alternating pattern to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can crack the sensor housing or strip the plastic threads.Torque specMAF Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect the electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the MAF sensor terminal and push down firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click. The locking tab should snap into place. Gently tug upward on the connector to verify it is fully locked and will not pull free.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in the engine bay
- Close the hood securely
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle. The engine should run smoothly without hesitation or rough idle
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner. Clear any MAF-related codes that were present before the repair
- Rev the engine gently to 2000-2500 RPM and verify smooth throttle response
- Take the vehicle for a short test drive and verify normal acceleration and smooth operation with no check engine light
- If a scanner with live data is available, verify the MAF sensor is reporting airflow values (typically 3-7 g/s at idle for this engine)
