This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on the 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 L83 engine, which monitors intake manifold pressure for engine management.
Warnings
⚠Perform this repair only when the engine is cool to avoid burns from hot components
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery may reset radio presets and other vehicle settings
⚠Do not force electrical connectors; locking tabs must be fully released to prevent damage

Parts
- Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor × 1 — ACDelco GM Original Equipment or equivalent
- MAP sensor O-ring seal × 1 — Often included with sensor
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Ensure engine is completely cool before starting work
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
- Locate the MAP sensor on the intake manifold (driver's side, rear of engine near firewall)
Procedure
- 1Access the MAP sensorOpen the hood and secure it in the raised position. Locate the MAP sensor on the intake manifold near the firewall on the driver's side. The sensor is a small black plastic component with an electrical connector and is mounted directly to the intake manifold.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the MAP sensor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight away from the sensor. Do not pull on the wiring harness itself. If the connector is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently release the locking tab while pulling.
- 3Remove MAP sensor mounting screwUsing the appropriate socket or screwdriver, remove the single mounting screw securing the MAP sensor to the intake manifold. Keep this screw in a safe location as it will be reused if the new sensor does not include a replacement.Torque specMAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 4Remove MAP sensor from manifoldGently pull the MAP sensor straight out from the intake manifold. The sensor has an O-ring seal that creates a tight fit. Twist slightly while pulling if needed, but do not pry against the manifold surface. Once removed, inspect the sensor port in the manifold for debris or damage.
- 5Clean mounting areaUsing a clean shop towel, wipe the MAP sensor mounting area on the intake manifold to remove any dirt, oil, or debris. Inspect the sensor port opening and ensure no foreign material has entered the manifold. Do not use compressed air directly into the port opening.
- 6Prepare new MAP sensorRemove the new MAP sensor from its packaging. Verify that the new sensor includes a fresh O-ring seal installed on the sensor body. If a separate O-ring is provided, carefully install it onto the sensor stem, ensuring it is seated properly in the O-ring groove without twisting or pinching.
- 7Install new MAP sensorAlign the new MAP sensor with the mounting hole in the intake manifold. Gently push the sensor straight into the manifold port until it seats fully against the mounting surface. The O-ring should create a snug fit. Ensure the sensor is oriented correctly with the electrical connector facing the proper direction for harness connection.
- 8Install mounting screwInsert the MAP sensor mounting screw and hand-thread it until snug. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screw to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as the sensor housing is plastic and can be damaged.Torque specMAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the MAP sensor terminals and push firmly until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked and will not pull free.
- 10Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery cable and tighten securely. If a scan tool is available, clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes related to the MAP sensor. The vehicle's computer will need to relearn idle and fuel trim parameters during initial driving.
Reassembly
- Ensure the MAP sensor mounting screw is torqued to specification to prevent vacuum leaks
- Verify the electrical connector is fully locked to prevent intermittent connection issues
- Double-check that no tools or materials were left in the engine compartment
Verification
- Start the engine and verify it idles smoothly without hesitation or rough running
- Check that the Check Engine Light does not illuminate after startup
- Using a scan tool, verify the MAP sensor is providing reasonable readings (typically 20-48 kPa at idle, depending on altitude)
- Test drive the vehicle to confirm normal acceleration and engine performance under load
- Re-scan for diagnostic codes after test drive to ensure no MAP sensor codes return
