Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool to ambient temperature
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
Procedure
- 1Locate PCV valveIdentify the PCV valve on the passenger side valve cover near the firewall. It is a cylindrical component with a rubber grommet inserted into the valve cover and a hose connected to the intake manifold.
- 2Disconnect PCV hoseGrasp the PCV hose firmly where it connects to the valve. Pull straight up and away from the PCV valve to disconnect. Some resistance is normal due to the grommet seal. If needed, gently twist while pulling to break the seal.
- 3Remove old PCV valveGrasp the PCV valve body and pull straight up out of the valve cover grommet. The valve should pull free from the grommet with moderate force. If the grommet comes out with the valve, carefully separate them and inspect the grommet for cracks or damage.
- 4Inspect grommetExamine the rubber grommet remaining in the valve cover (or removed with the valve). Check for cracks, tears, hardening, or deterioration. If damaged, use a pick tool to carefully remove the old grommet from the valve cover without damaging the valve cover opening.
- 5Install new grommet if neededIf the grommet was removed or replaced, install the new grommet into the valve cover opening. Press it firmly and evenly into place until it is fully seated and flush with the valve cover surface.
- 6Install new PCV valveInsert the new PCV valve into the grommet in the valve cover. Push firmly until the valve is fully seated in the grommet. The valve should be secure but not require excessive force. Ensure the valve is oriented with the connection port facing toward the intake manifold hose.Torque specPCV Valve8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect PCV hosePush the PCV hose firmly onto the new PCV valve connection port until it is fully seated. Ensure the connection is secure by attempting to gently pull the hose off - it should resist removal.
- 8Verify installationVisually inspect the PCV valve installation to ensure it is fully seated in the grommet, oriented correctly, and the hose is properly connected with no kinks or damage.
Reassembly
- No disassembly of other components required for this procedure
- Ensure all connections are secure and no tools are left in engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle
- Listen for any vacuum leaks or unusual hissing sounds near the PCV valve area
- With engine at idle, carefully remove the oil filler cap - you should feel slight vacuum suction indicating the PCV system is functioning
- Check for smooth idle quality with no rough running that could indicate improper PCV valve installation
- Inspect the PCV valve and hose connection for any oil leaks after a short test drive
