This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front subframe bushings on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine, requiring lowering of the front subframe while supporting major components.
Warnings
⚠️Vehicle must be supported on jack stands at all times. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
⚠️The subframe supports critical steering and suspension components. Use a transmission jack or secure support stand to control subframe descent and prevent sudden drops.
⚠Inspect brake lines, fuel lines, and wiring harnesses routed near the subframe before lowering. Ensure adequate slack exists to prevent damage.
⚠Subframe bolts may be seized or corroded. Apply penetrating oil 24 hours before beginning work if possible.

Parts
- Front subframe bushings (set of 4) × 1 — Use OEM specification or equivalent
- Ball joint cotter pins × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid surface and engage parking brake
- Chock rear wheels securely
- Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
- Raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands positioned at frame rails behind front suspension
- Remove both front wheels
- Spray all subframe mounting bolts, control arm bolts, and ball joint nuts with penetrating oil
- Inspect subframe area and identify routing of brake lines, fuel lines, and any wiring harnesses
Procedure
- 1Disconnect steering componentsLocate the steering shaft coupling where it connects to the steering rack at the subframe. Mark the alignment of the coupler bolt for reassembly reference. Remove the steering coupler pinch bolt and separate the steering shaft from the rack input shaft. Push the shaft upward and secure with wire or zip ties to prevent it from hanging.
- 2Remove sway bar linksLocate the sway bar end links connecting the sway bar to the lower control arms on both sides. Use an Allen key to hold the ball stud shaft while removing the upper nuts with a wrench. Disconnect both sway bar links from the lower control arms and allow them to hang from the sway bar.Torque specSway Bar Link76 Nm (56 lb-ft)
- 3Separate ball joints from knucklesRemove the cotter pins from both lower ball joint castle nuts. Using an 18mm socket, loosen but do not fully remove the ball joint nuts (leave them threaded on a few turns to catch the knuckle when it releases). Insert a ball joint separator tool between the lower control arm and steering knuckle. Strike or press the separator to break the taper fit. Once separated, remove the nuts completely and support the knuckle/hub assembly by the brake caliper to prevent strain on brake hoses.⚠Ball joint may separate suddenly under spring pressure. Keep hands clear of pinch points.Torque specBall Joint Nut110 Nm (81 lb-ft)
- 4Support the subframePosition a transmission jack or heavy-duty support stand under the center of the subframe. Raise the jack until it just makes contact and is supporting the weight of the subframe. Ensure the support is stable and centered to prevent the subframe from tilting during removal.
- 5Remove subframe mounting boltsLocate the four main subframe-to-frame mounting bolts (two at front, two at rear of subframe). Using an 18mm socket and breaker bar, remove all four subframe mounting bolts completely. The subframe weight should now be fully supported by the transmission jack. Inspect for any overlooked connections (check power steering lines, ABS sensor wiring, etc.).⚠️Ensure transmission jack is securely positioned and stable before removing bolts. Subframe weighs approximately 80-100 lbs plus attached components.
- 6Lower subframe partiallySlowly and carefully lower the transmission jack, lowering the subframe approximately 4-6 inches. Monitor all attached lines, hoses, and cables to ensure nothing is being stretched or damaged. Lower only enough to access the bushings at each mounting point. The subframe does not need to be completely removed for bushing replacement.
- 7Remove old bushings from subframeWith the subframe lowered, access each of the four bushing locations. The bushings are press-fit into the subframe mounting brackets. Using a bushing removal tool, large socket, or appropriately sized drift, press or drive the old bushings out of their mounting locations. Note the orientation of each bushing, particularly any indexing features or void positions. Clean all bushing bores thoroughly with a wire brush and inspect for damage or elongation.ℹ️Some subframe bushings have directional orientation or voids positioned for specific movement characteristics. Mark or photograph bushing orientation before removal.
- 8Install new bushingsApply a light coating of dish soap or bushing lubricant to the outer diameter of the new bushings (do not use petroleum-based lubricants). Align each new bushing with its mounting bore, ensuring proper orientation matches the original installation. Using a hydraulic press or bushing installation tool with appropriate support, press each new bushing into place until fully seated. Verify that bushings are seated evenly and flush with the mounting bracket surfaces.
- 9Raise and align subframeCarefully raise the transmission jack to lift the subframe back into position. Align the subframe mounting holes with the frame mounting points. Use a pry bar or drift punch if needed to align holes. Thread all four subframe mounting bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment before tightening any bolts. Verify the steering rack is properly positioned and brake/fuel lines are not pinched.
- 10Torque subframe boltsUsing a torque wrench and 18mm socket, tighten all four subframe mounting bolts. Follow a cross-pattern sequence (front left, rear right, front right, rear left) to ensure even seating. Torque all bolts to manufacturer specification. Once torqued, the transmission jack can be carefully lowered and removed.ℹ️Subframe mounting bolt torque specification not provided in database. Consult factory service manual for exact torque value, typically 120-180 Nm (88-133 lb-ft) for this vehicle.
- 11Reconnect ball jointsClean the ball joint studs and steering knuckle tapers with a wire brush. Position each steering knuckle over its corresponding ball joint stud. Install the ball joint nuts and tighten to specification using an 18mm socket and torque wrench. Install new cotter pins through the castle nuts and ball joint studs, bending the pins to secure them properly.Torque specBall Joint Nut110 Nm (81 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect sway bar links and steeringReconnect both sway bar end links to the lower control arms. Hold the ball stud with an Allen key while tightening the nuts to specification. Reconnect the steering shaft to the steering rack input shaft, aligning the marks made during disassembly. Install and torque the steering coupler pinch bolt to specification.Torque specSway Bar Link76 Nm (56 lb-ft)
- 13Install wheels and perform final torqueInstall both front wheels and thread lug nuts by hand. Lower the vehicle until the tires just touch the ground but the suspension is not yet loaded. Torque the wheel lug nuts to specification in a star pattern. Fully lower the vehicle to the ground with full weight on the suspension.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts169 Nm (125 lb-ft)
- 14Final torque with vehicle weight loadedWith the vehicle on the ground and suspension at ride height, torque the control arm bolts to specification. This ensures the bushings are torqued in their normal operating position, preventing premature wear. If control arm bolts were not disturbed and remained tight throughout the procedure, verify their torque at this time.ℹ️Control arm bushings must be torqued at normal ride height to prevent binding and premature failure.Torque specControl Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all fasteners have been installed and torqued to specification
- Check that all brake lines, fuel lines, and wiring are properly routed and secured away from moving suspension components
- Verify steering coupler alignment mark matches original position
Verification
- Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to verify full steering function without binding or unusual noises
- Perform a visual inspection under the vehicle to confirm the subframe is properly seated and all components are secured
- Test drive the vehicle at low speed in a safe area, checking for unusual noises, vibrations, or steering issues
- After 50-100 miles of driving, re-torque all subframe mounting bolts and verify wheel lug nut torque
- Schedule a professional wheel alignment to ensure proper suspension geometry after subframe service
