This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 engine and 6L80 or 8L90 automatic transmission.

Preparation

Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
Turn ignition off and remove key
Allow vehicle to sit for at least 10 minutes to allow modules to enter sleep mode

Procedure

Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm or battery terminal wrench, loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Secure the cable away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait at least 2 minutes for all electrical systems to discharge.

Raise and support vehicle
Raise the vehicle using a floor jack and support securely on jack stands at the frame rails. Ensure the vehicle is stable and level. The TCM is accessed from underneath the vehicle on the driver side of the transmission.

Locate the TCM
The TCM is mounted on the driver side of the transmission case, typically near the valve body area. It is a rectangular metal module with a large multi-pin electrical connector. Clean the area around the TCM to prevent contamination from entering the transmission.

Disconnect TCM electrical connector
Locate the connector retaining tab or bolt on the main TCM harness connector. If equipped with a bolt, use a 10mm socket to remove it. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the TCM. Inspect the connector and pins for corrosion or damage. Place clean towels below the area to catch any fluid drips.

Remove TCM mounting bolts
Using a 13mm socket, remove the TCM mounting bolts that secure the module to the transmission case. There are typically 2-3 bolts depending on transmission type. Keep track of bolt locations as they may be different lengths. Support the TCM with one hand while removing the final bolt.
⚠Transmission fluid may leak from the mounting area when the TCM is removed. Have towels ready and work carefully to minimize fluid loss.

Remove old TCM
Carefully pull the TCM straight out from the transmission case. The TCM has a seal and connector interface that extends into the valve body. Remove slowly to avoid damaging internal components. Allow any residual fluid to drain into your towels. Inspect the TCM mounting area and seal surface for debris or damage.

Prepare new TCM
Remove the new TCM from packaging and inspect it to ensure it matches the old unit exactly. Check that the connector seal/gasket is properly seated on the new TCM. If the seal came off with the old TCM, transfer it to the new unit if it is in good condition, or use a new seal. Apply a light coating of clean Dexron VI ATF to the seal to aid installation.

Install new TCM
Carefully align the TCM connector pins with the valve body connector inside the transmission. Push the TCM straight into the transmission case, ensuring proper alignment. The TCM should seat fully against the transmission case without excessive force. Verify the seal is not pinched or displaced.

Install TCM mounting bolts
Thread the TCM mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all bolts are started, tighten them in a criss-cross pattern using a 13mm socket and torque wrench to 14.0 Nm (10.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this can damage the transmission case threads or crack the TCM housing.

Reconnect electrical connector
Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector terminals if desired. Align the main harness connector with the TCM and push firmly until it clicks into place. If equipped with a connector retaining bolt, install and tighten to secure. Verify the connector is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged.

Lower vehicle and reconnect battery
Lower the vehicle from jack stands to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten securely. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine) to power up the electrical system.

Program TCM to vehicle
Using a GM-compatible scan tool with programming capability, perform TCM programming and VIN learning procedures. Follow the scan tool prompts exactly. This typically includes reading the VIN, downloading the appropriate calibration file, and flashing the TCM. The programming process may take 15-30 minutes. Do not interrupt power during programming.
⚠️Do not disconnect battery or turn off ignition during TCM programming. Interrupting the programming process can permanently damage the TCM and may require replacement.

Perform transmission relearn
After successful TCM programming, perform the transmission adaptive learning reset procedure using your scan tool. Start the engine and allow it to idle in Park for at least 2 minutes. Shift through all gear positions (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and manual shift positions if equipped) while stopped, pausing 3 seconds in each position.

Reassembly

Verify all electrical connectors are properly secured and locked
Check transmission fluid level using the proper hot checking procedure in the service manual
Top off transmission fluid as needed with ACDelco Dexron VI ATF if any was lost during TCM replacement
Reset radio presets and perform window auto-up/down relearn if applicable

Confirm no diagnostic trouble codes are present using a scan tool
Verify TCM communication is established and shows correct VIN and calibration
Test drive the vehicle through multiple drive cycles to ensure proper shift quality and timing
Monitor for transmission slipping, harsh shifts, or delayed engagement during test drive
Perform a final check for transmission fluid leaks around the TCM mounting area
Verify all transmission gear ranges (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and manual modes) function correctly
