Power Window Regulator - Rear

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear window regulator assembly on a 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab or double cab.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to allow airbag system to discharge
3. Roll the affected rear window to the full up position before disconnecting battery if possible
4. Gather all tools and parts near the work area

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door panel screws and trim
   Remove the door pull handle cover by prying gently with a trim tool. Remove the T30 Torx screw behind the handle. Remove the door lock bezel by prying upward. Remove any additional T30 Torx screws at the bottom edge of the door panel (typically 2-3 screws).

   Disconnect door panel electrical connectors
   Using a trim tool, carefully release the door panel clips by pulling outward and upward around the perimeter. Lift the panel upward to disengage it from the window sill. Disconnect all electrical connectors for power windows, locks, and mirror controls. Take note of connector positions for reassembly.

   Remove water shield
   Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier to access the window regulator. Work slowly to avoid tearing the barrier. If the adhesive is damaged, you will need to replace or re-seal it during reassembly. Only remove enough to access the regulator mounting bolts and motor.

   Secure window glass
   If the window is not already in the full up position, manually raise it to the top of the door frame. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame, taping across from the outside of the door. This prevents the glass from dropping when the regulator is disconnected.

   Disconnect window from regulator
   Locate the two bolts that attach the window glass to the regulator lift channel (typically 10mm). Remove these bolts while supporting the glass. The glass should now be free from the regulator but held in place by the tape.

   Disconnect regulator motor
   Locate the window motor electrical connector on the regulator motor. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector. Ensure you remember the routing path of the wire harness for reinstallation.

   Remove regulator mounting bolts
   Locate the regulator mounting bolts (typically 3-4 bolts securing the regulator assembly to the door frame). These are usually 10mm bolts. Remove all mounting bolts while supporting the regulator assembly to prevent it from falling.

   Remove regulator assembly
   Carefully maneuver the regulator assembly out through the access opening in the door frame. You may need to angle and rotate the assembly to clear the door structure. The regulator rails and motor must pass through the door opening simultaneously.

   Install new regulator assembly
   Position the new regulator assembly and carefully insert it through the door frame access opening. Align the regulator mounting holes with the door frame holes. Ensure the lift channel is positioned to align with the window glass mounting points.

    Install regulator mounting bolts
    Install all regulator mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque the mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even mounting pressure.

    Reconnect window motor and attach glass
    Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Remove the tape securing the window glass. Lower the glass enough to access the lift channel attachment points. Align the window glass mounting holes with the regulator lift channel and install the attachment bolts. Tighten securely but do not overtighten to avoid cracking the glass mounting points.

    Test window operation
    Before reinstalling the door panel, reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Test the window operation through several full up and down cycles. Ensure smooth operation with no binding, unusual noises, or hesitation. Verify the window seats properly in the up position.

    Reinstall vapor barrier and door panel
    Re-adhere the vapor barrier to the door frame, ensuring a complete seal. Replace any damaged adhesive. Position the door panel and reconnect all electrical connectors. Align the panel with the window sill and press firmly around the perimeter to seat all clips. Install all T30 Torx screws and replace trim pieces.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all door panel clips are properly seated before testing door functions
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged and locked
3. Check that the vapor barrier is fully sealed to prevent water intrusion and wind noise

Verification

• Test window operation through multiple complete cycles from full down to full up
• Verify window auto-up and auto-down features work correctly (re-initialization may be required)
• Check for proper window alignment in the full up position - should seal evenly against weatherstripping
• Listen for any abnormal noises during window operation
• Verify all door panel controls function properly (locks, mirrors, other windows)
• Check for any rattles or loose door panel clips by gently pushing on the panel
