Airbag - Side

Remove and replace the side airbag module in the seat bolster. This is a safety-critical restraint system component requiring careful handling and proper torque specifications.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key.
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and secure away from terminal.
4. Wait minimum 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.
5. Verify airbag system is disarmed by attempting to start vehicle (should not crank).
6. If working on driver side, move seat fully rearward for access. If passenger side, move seat fully forward.

Procedure

   Access seat side airbag location
   The 1992 Dodge Viper RT/10 does not have a factory side airbag module. There is no seat-mounted side airbag to service on this vehicle. Inspect the seat side panel for access seams or cover panel that conceals the airbag module. Look for a seam line or labeled airbag cover on the outboard side bolster. Note the orientation and position before disassembly. Note: No 1992 Dodge Viper was equipped with side airbags. The first-generation Viper RT/10 did not offer side airbags, so this procedure does not apply to a factory-original 1992 vehicle. Verify vehicle configuration before proceeding.
   ℹ️Many 1992 Vipers were not equipped with side airbags. If no airbag label or module cover is visible on seat bolster, your vehicle may not have this equipment.

   Remove seat trim cover fasteners
   Locate the fasteners securing the seat trim cover to access the airbag module. On seats with integrated side airbags, the outboard bolster cover is typically secured with Torx fasteners accessible from the seat back or bottom edge. Remove the Torx fasteners holding the side bolster cover in place. Set fasteners aside in organized manner noting their original positions.
   ⚠Do not force or pry aggressively on seat trim. Excessive force can damage clips or tear upholstery.

   Separate seat trim cover
   Carefully separate the side bolster trim cover from the seat frame to expose the airbag module mounting area. The cover may be secured with a combination of fasteners and retention clips along the edges. Work methodically around the perimeter, releasing clips with trim removal tools as needed. Pull cover away to reveal the airbag module and mounting bracket.
   ⚠Support the trim cover during removal to prevent stressing airbag wiring harness if still connected.

   Disconnect airbag module connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the side airbag module. The connector will have a locking tab or slider mechanism. Carefully release the connector lock (typically by pressing a tab or sliding the lock mechanism away from the connector body). Disconnect the electrical connector from the airbag module by pulling straight out without twisting. Do not pull on wires - grasp the connector body.
   ⚠️Verify battery has been disconnected for minimum 2 minutes before touching any airbag connectors.

   Remove airbag module mounting fasteners
   The side airbag module is secured to the seat frame with Torx mounting bolts. Identify all mounting bolts securing the module to the seat structure (typically 2-4 bolts depending on module design). Using appropriate Torx bit, remove the airbag module mounting bolts. Support the module with one hand while removing final fastener to prevent it from falling.

   Remove airbag module from seat
   Carefully lift the airbag module away from the seat frame mounting bracket. Keep the module oriented face-up (deployment side facing up) at all times. Immediately place the removed module face-up on a clean, flat surface away from the work area. Never set module face-down or place any objects on top of it.
   ⚠️Always keep airbag module face-up with deployment surface pointing away from your body.

   Inspect mounting bracket and seat structure
   With module removed, inspect the seat frame mounting bracket for any damage, cracks, or deformation. Check all mounting holes for stripped threads or elongation. Inspect the wiring harness routing path for chafing, cuts, or damage. Verify the seat frame structure shows no damage from previous impact or stress. Any structural damage requires professional evaluation before installing new airbag module.

   Position new airbag module
   Remove new airbag module from packaging carefully, keeping it face-up. Verify the new module matches the original in size, mounting pattern, and connector type. Position the new airbag module onto the seat frame mounting bracket, aligning all mounting bolt holes. Ensure no wiring is pinched between module and bracket. Thread all mounting bolts by hand first to verify proper alignment before tightening.
   ⚠Never drop or impact new airbag module during installation.

   Torque airbag module mounting bolts
   Using torque wrench with appropriate Torx bit, tighten the side airbag module mounting bolts to specification in a crossing pattern (if multiple bolts). Ensure even, secure mounting without over-tightening. Verify module sits flush against mounting bracket with no gaps or misalignment after torquing.
   ⚠️Precise torque is CRITICAL for airbag function. Use calibrated torque wrench - do not estimate.

    Connect airbag module electrical connector
    Inspect the module connector and harness connector for any dirt, corrosion, or damage. Clean if necessary. Align the electrical connector with the module terminal and push together firmly until the locking mechanism engages with an audible click. Tug gently on connector (not wires) to verify it is fully locked. Verify connector lock is fully engaged.
    ⚠Ensure connector is fully seated and locked. Partial connection can prevent airbag deployment.

    Reinstall seat trim cover
    Route the wiring harness back through its original path in the seat frame, ensuring no pinch points. Position the side bolster trim cover back over the airbag module and seat frame. Engage any retention clips around the perimeter by pressing firmly until they snap into place. Install the Torx fasteners that secure the trim cover, starting with center fasteners and working outward. Tighten fasteners evenly - do not over-tighten soft trim fasteners.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Before fully tightening, ensure no tools or loose items are near battery. Tighten battery terminal bolt to specification. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Note: the 1992 Viper RT/10 has no airbag system and therefore no airbag warning light self-check sequence to observe. If light remains on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, do not drive vehicle - system requires professional diagnosis.
    ⚠️All occupants must exit vehicle before reconnecting battery and turning on ignition for first system check.

    Perform system verification
    With ignition ON and airbag warning light extinguished, cycle ignition OFF and ON two more times to verify consistent system operation. Light should perform same self-check sequence each time (illuminate briefly, then extinguish). The 1992 Viper has no airbag control module and predates OBD2 diagnostics, so no airbag diagnostic trouble codes exist to scan for on this vehicle. Clear any old codes if new module installation was successful.
    ⚠If airbag warning light does not operate correctly, STOP. Do not drive vehicle until system is professionally diagnosed.

3. Return seat to original position and verify full range of motion is not impeded.

Verification

• Airbag warning light remains OFF during normal vehicle operation.
• Seat trim cover is flush and secure with no visible gaps around module area.
• Seat adjustments and functions operate normally without interference.
• No unusual sounds, clicks, or movement from airbag module area during seat use.
• If scan tool available, verify zero airbag diagnostic trouble codes stored in system.
