Door Handle - Interior

Remove and replace the interior door handle assembly on the 1992 Dodge Viper, including disconnecting the latch cable and removing the handle mechanism from the door panel.

Preparation

Procedure

   Remove Door Panel Fasteners
   Locate and remove the fasteners securing the door panel. Check the perimeter and behind the handle area for screws or fasteners. On the 1992 Viper, expect fasteners around the door pull/armrest area and along the lower edge of the panel. Remove these fasteners and set aside.

   Using a plastic trim tool, carefully pry the door panel away from the door frame starting at the bottom rear corner. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing the retaining clips. The Viper uses push-type clips that release with outward pressure. Once all clips are released, disengage the panel from the door structure and lift it clear. Note that the 1992 Viper roadster uses removable side curtains rather than a fixed door glass/sill, so panel engagement at the top edge differs from a conventional door.

   Disconnect Interior Handle Cable
   With the door panel removed or pulled back, locate the cable connection at the interior door handle mechanism. The cable end typically has a barrel-style connector that seats in the handle lever. Use needle-nose pliers to carefully unhook the cable end from the handle lever, then slide the cable housing out of its retaining clip on the handle assembly.

   Locate the fasteners securing the interior handle assembly to the door structure. Remove all handle mounting screws (count per OEM service documentation) completely and retain them for reinstallation.

   Extract Handle Assembly
   Carefully pull the interior handle assembly away from the door panel or door structure. Maneuver it to clear any mounting brackets or guide pins. Inspect the mounting area for any damage or wear that should be addressed before installing the new handle.

   Install New Handle Assembly
   Position the new interior handle assembly into the mounting location, aligning it with the screw holes and any guide pins or brackets. Ensure the handle is oriented correctly with the cable connection point accessible.

   Install Handle Mounting Fasteners
   Install the handle mounting screws (count per OEM service documentation) and tighten to the manufacturer-specified torque using a torque driver. Do not overtighten as the handle assembly may be mounted to plastic components.

   Reconnect Door Latch Cable
   Reconnect the door latch cable to the new handle assembly. Insert the cable housing into its retaining clip on the handle, then hook the cable barrel end onto the handle lever. Ensure the cable moves freely and is not kinked or binding.

   Test Handle Operation
   Before reinstalling the door panel, test the interior handle operation. Pull the handle and verify that it actuates the door latch and the door opens smoothly. Check that the handle returns to its rest position when released.

    Reinstall Door Panel
    Position the door panel back onto the door, engaging the top edge over the window sill first. Align the panel with the door frame and press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Install the panel fasteners and tighten screws to specification if they thread into plastic components, or snug if they thread into metal.

Reassembly

1. Verify all door panel clips are fully seated and the panel is flush with the door frame
2. Confirm all fasteners are installed and properly tightened
3. Test door handle operation from both inside and outside before closing the door fully

• Open and close the door using the interior handle multiple times to confirm smooth operation
• Verify the handle returns to its rest position without binding or sticking
• Check that the door panel is secure with no rattles or loose areas
• Confirm the door latches and unlatches properly from both inside and outside
