Door Panel

This procedure covers removal and installation of the interior door panel on a 1992 Dodge Viper, including disconnection of electrical components and window/lock controls.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Open the door fully and support if necessary to prevent strain on hinges during panel removal
3. Gather all tools and replacement clips before beginning
4. If equipped with power windows/locks, consider disconnecting battery negative terminal to prevent electrical issues

Procedure

   Remove door pull handle screw cover
   Locate the small plastic screw cover in the door pull handle recess. Carefully pry out the cover using a plastic trim tool to expose the fastener beneath. Set the cover aside in a safe location.

   Remove door pull handle fastener
   Remove the Phillips or Torx screw securing the door pull handle assembly to the door structure. On early Vipers, this is typically a single fastener. Keep the screw with the cover for reassembly.

   Remove window switch bezel
   If equipped with power windows, carefully pry up the window switch bezel from the armrest area using a plastic trim tool. Start at the rear edge and work forward. The bezel is retained by clips and should release with moderate upward pressure.
   ⚠Do not pull the bezel away from the door until electrical connections are addressed in the next step.

   Disconnect window and lock switch connectors
   With the bezel lifted, disconnect the electrical connectors for the power window switch and door lock switch (if equipped). Press the locking tab on each connector and pull straight up to separate. For manual windows, skip this step.
   ℹ️Mark or photograph connector orientation if multiple connectors are present to ensure correct reassembly.

   Remove visible panel screws
   Locate and remove all visible screws around the door panel perimeter. Check the lower edge of the panel, the area below the armrest, and near the interior door handle. The 1992 Viper typically uses 3-4 screws in these locations. Store screws in a container to prevent loss.

   Release door panel retaining clips
   Beginning at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, carefully insert a panel removal tool between the door panel and the metal door frame. Gently pry outward to release the retaining clips. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing clips approximately every 6-8 inches. You should feel and hear each clip release. Do not force; if a clip does not release easily, check for missed screws.
   ⚠The panel may have 8-10 clips around the perimeter. Apply force gradually to avoid breaking clips or cracking the panel.

   Lift panel up and away from door
   Once all clips are released, lift the entire door panel upward approximately 1-2 inches to disengage it from the window sill channel at the top of the door. Then pull the panel away from the door frame. The panel should come free easily once fully unclipped.
   ℹ️If the panel resists, do not force it. Check for additional fasteners or clips that may have been missed.

   Disconnect door handle cable (if applicable)
   With the panel pulled away from the door, access the back side and locate the door handle cable or rod linkage. Disconnect the cable by unclipping it from the handle mechanism or sliding it out of its retaining clip. Note the routing and orientation for reassembly.
   ℹ️Some 1992 Vipers may use a direct rod linkage instead of a cable. Identify your configuration before attempting removal.

   Remove panel from vehicle
   With all electrical connections and mechanical linkages disconnected, fully remove the door panel from the vehicle. Place it face-down on a clean, padded surface to prevent scratches to the visible surface.

    Inspect clips and fasteners
    Examine all retaining clips on the back of the door panel and in the door frame for damage. Replace any broken clips. Check that all fastener holes are intact and not stripped. Clean the panel mounting surface on the door frame of any debris or old adhesive.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the door handle cable or rod linkage first, ensuring proper engagement and routing
2. Reconnect all electrical connectors for window and lock switches, ensuring locking tabs fully engage
3. Align the door panel with the window sill channel at the top of the door and slide the panel upward into position
4. Press firmly around the entire perimeter of the panel to seat all retaining clips - you should hear and feel each clip snap into place
5. Install all panel screws and tighten to 2.0 Nm (1.5 lb-ft) per the Door Panel Screws specification - do not overtighten as this can crack the plastic
6. Install the window switch bezel by aligning the clips and pressing down until fully seated
7. Install the door pull handle fastener and tighten to specification
8. Install the screw cover in the door pull handle recess
9. Test all switches, door handle operation, and window function (if equipped) before considering the job complete

Verification

• Open and close the door using the interior handle - it should operate smoothly without binding
• Test power window and lock switches (if equipped) to confirm proper electrical connection
• Check that the door panel is flush with the door frame around the entire perimeter with no gaps or protruding clips
• Verify that all trim pieces and bezels are securely fastened and aligned properly
• Inspect the panel while opening and closing the door to ensure no rattles or loose components
