Floor Mat Hooks

Installation of floor mat retention hooks in the driver and passenger footwells of a 1992 Dodge Viper to secure factory or aftermarket floor mats.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Remove existing floor mats from driver and passenger sides
3. Inspect carpet for existing hook locations or factory provisions (some Vipers may have pre-drilled holes or reinforcement plates)
4. Clean carpet surface thoroughly to identify any existing mounting points

Procedure

   Determine Hook Mounting Location
   Position the floor mat in the driver footwell and identify the optimal hook location. Note that the 1992 Viper (RT/10) is a minimalist roadster and did not come with factory floor mats; verify the actual footwell surface (carpet, rubber, or exposed floor) before proceeding. The hook should be placed approximately 8-10 inches forward of the seat mounting rail, centered laterally in the footwell, where it will engage the mat grommet without interfering with pedal operation or heel placement. Mark this location with a pen or chalk through the mat grommet.    Check for Obstructions Beneath Carpet
   Pull back the carpet at the marked location to inspect the floor structure underneath. Check for fuel lines, wiring harnesses, brake lines, or structural reinforcements that could be damaged by drilling. The Viper uses a tubular steel spaceframe with steel floor sections beneath fiberglass body panels, so verify the substrate material before drilling and avoid all frame tubes and chassis members. If obstructions are present, adjust the hook location 2-3 inches in any direction and re-mark.

   Prepare Mounting Hole
   Use a center punch to create a pilot dimple at the exact mounting location through the carpet backing. This prevents drill bit walking on the carpet surface. If the hook assembly requires multiple fasteners, mark all hole locations at this time according to the hook base plate pattern.

   Drill Mounting Hole(s)
   Using a 3/8" drill bit (or size specified by the hook hardware), drill only through the carpet and its backing at the center-punched location—do NOT drill into the underlying steel floor or chassis structure. Prefer using existing factory holes or an adhesive/clamp-on hook base that does not require drilling into the floor. If drilling any substrate is unavoidable, confirm from beneath that no fuel lines, brake lines, wiring, or frame tubes are behind the location.    Install Driver Side Hook Assembly
   Insert the hook post into the drilled hole from the top side. From underneath the carpet (access by pulling carpet edge back or reaching under), install the backing plate or expansion anchor according to the kit instructions. Thread the self-tapping screw or bolt through the backing hardware and tighten until snug. Do not overtighten as this can strip the anchor or deform the mounting surface. The hook should be secure with minimal side-to-side movement. Verify the hook rotates freely and the post stands perpendicular to the floor.

   Install Passenger Side Hook Assembly
   Repeat the installation process for the passenger footwell using the same drilling and fastening technique. Ensure the hook orientation matches the driver side (typically pointing toward the seat) for consistent mat retention.

   Test Hook Engagement
   Place the floor mat over each installed hook and press the mat grommet onto the hook post until it clicks or seats fully. Pull upward on the mat corner with moderate force to verify the hook retains the mat securely without pulling free from the floor. The mat should remain flat without bunching around the hook.

Reassembly

1. Replace carpet edges to original position if disturbed during installation
2. Install floor mats and engage all retention hooks
3. Verify no interference with pedal travel or seat adjustments

Verification

• Test each hook by pulling firmly on the engaged mat—it should not release without deliberate upward force on the grommet
• Verify hook posts do not protrude excessively (no more than 1.5" above carpet) to avoid catching shoe heels
• Check that mat lays flat and does not bunch or curl at corners
• Operate all pedals through full travel to confirm no mat interference with accelerator, brake, or clutch
