Glove Box

Removal and installation of the glove box assembly from the passenger side dashboard, including disconnection of lighting and latch hardware.

• Glove box lamp × 1 — Use OEM specification
• Glove box damper straps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on level ground and turn off the ignition
2. Open the glove box door fully and remove all contents
3. Ensure adequate lighting in the passenger footwell and dashboard area

Procedure

   Disconnect glove box lamp
   With the glove box door open, check whether a glove box lamp is present (early Vipers had minimal interior features and may not have one). If equipped, locate the lamp, release it from its socket per its retention type, and disconnect the electrical connector before setting it aside.

   Locate and identify fasteners
   Inspect the perimeter of the glove box opening from inside the compartment. On the 1992 Viper, inspect the inner box frame to determine the actual number, type, and location of the glove box mounting fasteners, as the exact count and head type require verification against factory service documentation. Check the top edge, sides, and bottom for all mounting points.

   Remove glove box mounting screws
   Using the appropriate screwdriver, remove all screws securing the glove box assembly to the dashboard structure (verify exact count against factory documentation). Keep these screws organized as they are specific to the glove box installation. Note that these fasteners may be partially obscured by the box liner or hinge area.
   Torque spec

   Glove Box Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)

   Release damper straps
   If equipped with damper straps (fabric or plastic straps that control glove box door opening speed), disconnect them from their mounting points on either the box or door. These typically snap onto plastic posts or slide out of retention slots. Note their orientation for reinstallation.

   Remove glove box assembly
   With all fasteners removed, carefully pull the glove box assembly straight out from the dashboard opening. Angle the assembly slightly if needed to clear the opening. Support the box from underneath to prevent it from dropping. Inspect the mounting area for any remaining hardware or clips.

   Inspect mounting points and hardware
   With the glove box removed, inspect the dashboard mounting surface for damage, cracks, or missing threaded inserts. Check the glove box assembly itself for cracks in the hinge area, damaged latch mechanism, or broken mounting bosses. Inspect damper straps for wear or tearing. Replace any damaged components before reinstallation.

Reassembly

1. Installation is the reverse of removal with the following notes
2. Ensure damper straps are properly seated in their mounting points before positioning the glove box
3. Align the glove box assembly carefully with the dashboard opening before inserting screws to prevent cross-threading
4. Tighten glove box mounting screws in a cross pattern to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft) to ensure even seating
5. Reconnect the glove box lamp electrical connector with a positive click, then install the lamp housing by aligning tabs and twisting clockwise
6. Test the glove box door operation to ensure smooth opening and closing with proper damper function
7. Verify the lamp illuminates when the glove box door is opened

Verification

• Open and close the glove box door several times to confirm smooth operation without binding or unusual noise
• Verify the glove box latch engages and releases properly
• Confirm the glove box lamp illuminates when the door is opened and turns off when closed
• Check that there are no gaps between the glove box and dashboard trim, and that the door sits flush when closed
• Verify all mounting screws are tight and the assembly does not shift or rattle
