Headlight Bulb - Single

Remove and replace a single headlight bulb in the 1992 Dodge Viper by accessing the bulb from the engine bay behind the headlight assembly.

• H4 headlight bulb (9003/HB2) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket equivalent

Preparation

1. Allow engine and headlights to cool completely if vehicle has been recently operated
2. Open hood and secure in raised position
3. Identify which headlight bulb requires replacement (driver or passenger side)
4. Prepare clean work gloves for handling the new bulb

Procedure

1. 1

   Locate bulb access at rear of headlight assembly
   From the engine bay, locate the rear of the headlight assembly on the affected side. The bulb socket and connector are accessed directly from behind the headlight housing without removing any covers or assemblies. Use a flashlight if needed to identify the bulb connector and retaining mechanism.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Grasp the electrical connector at the base of the bulb socket (not the wires). Press the release tab or pull firmly to disconnect the connector from the bulb socket. The connector may be stiff if not previously serviced.

   Remove bulb retaining mechanism
   Identify the bulb retaining mechanism at the rear of the headlight housing. This is typically a wire spring clip or rotating collar. If a wire spring clip: release the clip by pressing and unhooking it from the retention points. If a rotating collar: turn counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn to release, then pull the collar and bulb assembly rearward out of the housing.

   Extract failed bulb
   Carefully pull the bulb straight back out of the headlight housing. Note the orientation of the bulb base and alignment tabs for installation of the replacement. Inspect the bulb socket and housing for corrosion, melting, or damage. If damage is present, the socket or housing may require service before installing the new bulb.

   Prepare new bulb for installation
   Remove the new bulb from its packaging. Using clean gloves or holding only the plastic base, avoid any contact with the glass envelope. Verify the bulb base matches the original and that alignment tabs are present and undamaged.

   Install new bulb into housing
   Align the bulb base tabs with the slots in the headlight housing. Insert the bulb straight into the housing until it is fully seated against the housing seal. Ensure the bulb is not cocked or misaligned in the socket.

   Secure bulb retaining mechanism
   Reinstall the bulb retaining mechanism. If wire spring clip: hook the clip back into its retention points, ensuring it firmly secures the bulb against the housing. If rotating collar: push the collar forward and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks in place. Verify the bulb cannot be pulled free.

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector onto the bulb socket terminals until it clicks or locks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and will not pull free.

Reassembly

1. No disassembly was required for this procedure; all components remain in original position

Verification

• Turn the headlight switch to the ON position and verify the new bulb illuminates
• Check both low beam and high beam operation (H4 bulbs are dual-filament)
• Inspect for proper beam pattern and alignment; if beam appears significantly different from the opposite side, bulb may not be fully seated
• Turn off headlights and close hood
