Headlight Bulbs - Pair

Replace both headlight bulbs on a 1992 Dodge Viper. The first-generation Viper uses a sealed housing design with accessible bulb replacement from the engine bay.

• H4 halogen headlight bulb × 2 — 9003 / H4 / HB2 bulb (60/55W)

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
2. Allow headlights to cool if recently operated (minimum 10 minutes)
3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
4. Identify headlight assemblies at front of vehicle behind grille opening

Procedure

1. 1

   Access driver side headlight bulb
   Working at the front of the vehicle, locate the driver side headlight assembly in the nose. Behind the headlight housing, identify the bulb connector and retaining ring. You will see a three-wire connector attached to the back of the bulb socket.

   Disconnect driver side bulb connector
   Grasp the bulb connector firmly and pull straight back to disconnect it from the bulb terminals. There is no release tab; the connector is friction-fit. If connector is stubborn, gently rock it side to side while pulling to break the seal.

   Remove driver side bulb retaining ring
   Locate the wire retaining clip that secures the bulb in the housing. Depress the wire clip and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 90 degrees to release tension, then unhook the clip from its mounting tabs. Swing the clip away from the bulb.

   Extract driver side bulb
   Carefully pull the H4 bulb straight out of the headlight housing. Do not twist or rock the bulb excessively. If bulb is stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling straight back. Set old bulb aside on clean surface.

   Install new driver side bulb
   Using clean cloth or gloves to avoid touching the glass, remove new H4 bulb from packaging. Align the bulb locating tabs with the slots in the headlight housing and insert the bulb straight in until it seats fully. The bulb will only fit in one orientation due to the asymmetric tab design.

   Secure driver side bulb retaining ring
   Swing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base. Hook the clip onto its mounting tabs and rotate clockwise approximately 90 degrees to lock it in place. Ensure the clip is fully engaged and applies even pressure on the bulb base.

   Reconnect driver side bulb connector
   Push the three-wire connector firmly onto the bulb terminals until it seats completely. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.

   Access passenger side headlight bulb
   Move to the passenger side at the front of the vehicle. Locate the passenger side headlight assembly in the nose. Access is similar to the driver side. Identify the bulb connector and retaining ring at the back of the headlight housing.
9. 9

   Replace passenger side bulb
   Repeat steps 2 through 7 for the passenger side headlight: disconnect the bulb connector, release and remove the wire retaining clip, extract the old bulb, install the new bulb using clean cloth or gloves, secure the retaining clip, and reconnect the electrical connector.

Reassembly

1. Verify both bulb connectors are fully seated and secure
2. Close hood
3. Dispose of old bulbs properly (check local regulations for halogen bulb disposal)

Verification

• Turn ignition to accessory or on position and activate headlights
• Verify both low beams illuminate properly
• Switch to high beams and verify both high beams function
• Check for proper headlight aim by observing beam pattern on garage door or wall from 25 feet away; low beams should project level or slightly downward
• Confirm no flickering or intermittent operation
