HVAC Control Panel

Remove and replace the HVAC control panel assembly from the center console, including disconnecting the electrical connector and control cables.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
3. Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been in sun or recently operated with heater
4. Gather all tools and new control panel if replacing

Procedure

   Remove center console trim bezel
   Locate the center console trim bezel surrounding the HVAC controls and radio. This bezel is retained by clips around its perimeter. Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry the bezel away from the console starting at the bottom edge near the shifter. Work around the perimeter, releasing clips as you go. Release the perimeter retaining clips (verify exact count against factory documentation). Once all clips are released, pull the bezel forward and set aside. Note: Verify correct HVAC control panel part number against factory parts documentation for the 1992 Dodge Viper RT/10

   Remove radio unit if equipped
   Early 1992 Viper RT/10 models were commonly delivered without a factory radio. If a radio or aftermarket head unit is present, remove its mounting hardware (verify screw count and bracket type for the specific installation) to access the upper HVAC panel mounting screws. Slide the radio forward enough to access the antenna lead and electrical connector on the rear. Disconnect both and remove the radio from the opening. Set aside in a safe location.

   Remove HVAC control panel mounting screws
   Locate the screws securing the HVAC control panel to the instrument panel structure (verify exact count and location pattern against factory documentation). Remove all screws and retain for reinstallation. Remove all 4 screws and retain for reinstallation.

   Pull control panel forward
   Carefully pull the HVAC control panel assembly forward from the instrument panel opening approximately 3-4 inches. Do not pull too far as the control cables and electrical connector are still attached at the rear. Use a flashlight to illuminate the rear of the panel.

   Disconnect control cables
   Working behind the control panel, locate the 3 control cables attached to the rear of the panel: temperature blend door cable (center), mode door cable (left), and recirculation door cable (right). Each cable has a plastic end fitting that snaps into a socket on the control lever. Using needle-nose pliers or your fingers, squeeze the retaining tabs on each cable end fitting and pull straight back to release from the control lever. Note the position of each cable for reinstallation.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the main electrical connector on the rear of the control panel. This connector supplies power to the blower motor switch and illumination lamp. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect. The connector is a single multi-pin type.

   Remove control panel assembly
   With all cables and electrical connections disconnected, remove the HVAC control panel assembly completely from the instrument panel opening. Inspect the panel for any damage to the control levers, switch contacts, or mounting tabs.

   Install new or repaired control panel
   Position the new or repaired HVAC control panel near the instrument panel opening. Reconnect the main electrical connector to the rear of the panel, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on the connector body.

   Reconnect control cables
   Reconnect the 3 control cables to their respective control levers on the rear of the panel. Ensure each cable end fitting snaps fully into its socket with the retaining tabs engaged. Temperature blend cable connects to the center lever, mode cable to the left lever, and recirculation cable to the right lever. Verify each cable moves freely without binding.

    Test control operation before securing
    Before pushing the panel back into the opening, temporarily reconnect the battery and turn the ignition to ON (engine off). Test all control functions: move the temperature lever through its full range, cycle the mode selector through all positions, test the recirculation switch, and verify all blower speeds function. If everything operates correctly, disconnect the battery again before proceeding.

    Secure control panel
    Push the HVAC control panel assembly back into the instrument panel opening, ensuring no wires or cables are pinched behind the panel. Align the mounting screw holes and install the mounting screws (verify count). Tighten the screws snugly by hand — do not overtighten, as they thread into plastic/panel structure.

    Reinstall radio and trim bezel
    If removed, reinstall the radio unit by reconnecting the electrical connector and antenna lead, then sliding the radio back into the opening. Install the 4 radio mounting screws. Align the center console trim bezel with the opening and press firmly around the perimeter to engage all 6 retaining clips. Verify the bezel is flush and secure.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the negative battery cable
2. Set the HVAC controls to the mid-temperature position before starting the engine
3. Verify all control cable adjustments by testing full range of motion for each control

Verification

• Start the engine and verify blower motor operates at all speed settings
• Move the temperature control through its full range and verify air temperature changes from cold to hot
• Cycle the mode selector through all positions (defrost, vent, floor, bi-level) and verify airflow direction changes
• Test the recirculation switch and verify door operation by listening for the actuator
• Verify control panel illumination lights activate with headlights or parking lights
• Check that all trim pieces are secure and properly aligned
• Verify no unusual noises or binding when operating any control
