Power Mirror Motor

Remove and replace the power mirror motor on a 1992 Dodge Viper, including door panel removal, mirror assembly access, and electrical connector service.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal to prevent electrical shorts
3. Allow vehicle to sit for 5 minutes after battery disconnect for airbag system discharge
4. Roll window down fully to provide clearance and prevent regulator strain during door panel removal

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door panel fasteners
   Locate and remove all door panel fasteners. Remove the door pull/armrest assembly fasteners (verify driver type against factory documentation)—these are typically located in the recessed area of the armrest. Remove any fastener concealed behind the interior door handle escutcheon. Check the lower perimeter of the door panel for additional fasteners along the bottom edge.

   Disconnect door handle linkage
   Carefully pull the door panel away from the door frame starting at the bottom rear corner. Use a panel removal tool to release the retaining clips around the perimeter—work slowly to avoid breaking clips. Once the panel is loose enough to access behind it, reach in and disconnect the door handle rod linkage by sliding the plastic retainer clip off and unhooking the rod from the handle mechanism.

   Remove door panel and disconnect switches
   Lift the door panel upward to disengage it from the window sill retainer at the top of the door. As you pull the panel away, locate the electrical connectors for the power mirror switch and any other switches integrated into the door panel. Press the locking tabs and disconnect all electrical connectors. Set the door panel aside in a protected location.

   Remove vapor barrier access
   Peel back enough of the plastic vapor barrier to access the mirror mounting area—do not remove the entire barrier. The mirror motor access is at the upper front corner of the door. If the barrier is sealed with butyl adhesive, carefully separate it without tearing the plastic. You will need to reseal this area during reassembly.

   Disconnect mirror electrical connector
   Locate the power mirror electrical connector inside the door cavity. It will be a multi-pin connector running from the door harness to the mirror assembly. Press the connector locking tab and disconnect it. If the connector is corroded or difficult to separate, spray electrical contact cleaner and allow it to penetrate before attempting removal.

   Remove interior mirror trim bezel
   From inside the vehicle, locate the triangular mirror trim bezel at the front upper corner of the door panel mounting area. This trim piece covers the mirror mounting nuts. Carefully pry it away from the door frame using a panel tool—it is typically held by clips. Remove the bezel to access the mirror mounting hardware.

   Remove mirror assembly mounting nuts
   Remove the nuts securing the mirror assembly to the door (verify exact count and socket size against factory documentation before starting). Support the mirror from the outside while removing the final nut to prevent it from falling. Once all nuts are removed, carefully pull the mirror assembly outward from the door, feeding the electrical connector pigtail through the door opening.

   Disassemble mirror housing
   With the mirror assembly on a clean workbench, locate the fasteners securing the mirror motor to the housing. These are typically several small screws on the back of the mirror housing (verify exact count and screw type against factory documentation). Remove these screws and carefully separate the motor assembly from the mirror housing. Disconnect any internal wiring clips between the motor and mirror glass adjustment mechanism.

   Install new mirror motor
   Position the new mirror motor into the mirror housing, aligning the drive gears with the mirror glass adjustment mechanism. Reconnect any internal wiring clips. Install and tighten the motor mounting screws to secure the motor to the housing. Verify the motor shaft engages properly with the mirror adjustment mechanism by manually testing movement.

    Reinstall mirror assembly to door
    Feed the mirror electrical connector and pigtail through the door opening from the outside. Position the mirror assembly against the door and align the mounting studs with the holes in the door frame. From inside the vehicle, install the 3 mounting nuts and tighten them in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure. Do not overtighten as this can crack the mirror base.

    Connect electrical and test function
    Inside the door cavity, reconnect the power mirror electrical connector—ensure it clicks into place securely. Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position and test the mirror motor function using the door-mounted switch. Verify the mirror moves in all directions (up, down, left, right) smoothly. If function is correct, disconnect the battery again before continuing.

    Reseal vapor barrier and reinstall trim
    Press the vapor barrier back into place, ensuring it seals around the edges with the existing butyl adhesive. If adhesive has lost its tackiness, apply new butyl tape or weatherstrip adhesive to ensure a proper moisture seal. Reinstall the interior mirror trim bezel by aligning the clips and pressing it firmly into place.

    Reinstall door panel
    Reconnect all electrical connectors to the power mirror switch and other door-mounted switches. Position the door panel near the door and reconnect the door handle linkage rod—ensure the plastic retainer clip is fully seated. Align the top edge of the door panel with the window sill channel and press downward to engage the retainer. Starting at the top, press the door panel firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. You should hear or feel each clip snap into place.

    Reinstall door panel fasteners
    Install all door panel fasteners in reverse order of removal. Install the Phillips screw behind the door handle escutcheon. Install the T25 Torx fasteners securing the armrest assembly. Install any additional fasteners along the bottom edge of the door panel. Ensure all fasteners are snug but do not overtighten plastic-retained screws.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect battery negative terminal and torque to specification
2. Test power mirror operation in all directions before final verification
3. Verify door panel is secure with no rattles by gently pulling on various sections
4. Check that all door functions operate correctly including window, handle, and locks

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position and test mirror adjustment in all four directions using the door switch—movement should be smooth and consistent
• Verify mirror holds position when adjustment is released and does not drift
• Check that door panel is flush and all clips are engaged with no gaps or loose sections
• Confirm door handle operates smoothly and interior trim bezel is secure
• Cycle window up and down to ensure door panel installation did not interfere with regulator operation
