Shifter Boot

Remove and replace the shifter boot on a 1992 Dodge Viper's manual transmission. This involves removing the center console trim and accessing the boot retaining hardware at the transmission tunnel.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Allow transmission tunnel and shifter to cool if vehicle was recently operated
3. Ensure shifter is in neutral position for easiest access

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center console trim surround
   Carefully pry up the center console trim panel surrounding the shifter boot using a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver wrapped in a shop towel. The panel is retained by plastic clips around its perimeter. Work around the edges gently, releasing each clip progressively rather than forcing one section. Lift the panel up and away once all clips are released.

   Disconnect power window switches (if applicable)
   The 1992 Viper RT/10 shifter trim surround does not typically contain power window or accessory switches; if any wiring is present on the underside of the panel, disconnect it by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight out. Set the trim panel aside in a safe location. Press the locking tab and pull straight out to separate each connector. Set the trim panel aside in a safe location.

   Locate boot retaining hardware
   With the trim panel removed, you will see the shifter boot secured to the transmission tunnel floor. The boot is typically held by a retaining ring or clips at its base. Inspect the specific retention method used on your vehicle—early Vipers may use a metal retaining ring with 4 screws or a plastic clip ring.

   Remove boot retaining fasteners
   Remove the fasteners securing the boot retaining ring to the transmission tunnel (verify exact count and type against the FSM). If your vehicle uses a clip-style retainer, carefully pry the retaining ring upward to release the clips. Keep fasteners and retaining hardware organized for reinstallation.    Slide boot up shifter lever
   With the base released, slide the old boot upward along the shifter lever. The top of the boot may be secured around the shifter knob base with a clip ring or drawstring. If present, loosen or remove this upper retention method to fully free the boot from the shifter assembly.

   Inspect shifter and tunnel area
   With the boot removed, inspect the shifter mechanism, tunnel opening, and surrounding area for debris, damage, or excessive wear. Clean any dirt or residue from the shifter lever and mounting surface using shop towels. Check the condition of the retaining ring and clips; replace if cracked or damaged.

   Install new shifter boot
   Slide the new boot onto the shifter lever from the top, ensuring the boot is properly oriented with any stitching or branding facing the correct direction. Pull the boot down toward the transmission tunnel, ensuring it is not twisted. Secure the upper portion of the boot around the shifter knob base using the clip ring or drawstring if applicable.

   Secure boot to transmission tunnel
   Position the lower edge of the boot over the mounting area on the transmission tunnel. Place the retaining ring over the boot edge, aligning the screw holes. Install the retaining screws (matching the count removed earlier) and tighten snugly by hand — these are light trim fasteners and do not require a torque spec. If using clip-style retention, press the retaining ring firmly into place until all clips engage with an audible snap.

   Reconnect electrical connectors
   If any electrical connectors were disconnected from the underside of the trim panel, reconnect them by aligning and pressing firmly until the locking tabs engage. Verify each connector is fully seated. Verify each connector is fully seated.

    Reinstall center console trim surround
    Position the center console trim panel over the shifter boot, aligning the panel with the console opening. Press down firmly around the perimeter to engage all mounting clips. Work around the panel systematically, ensuring each clip is fully seated. Verify the panel sits flush with no gaps.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim clips are fully engaged and the panel sits flush with no rattles
2. Verify the shifter boot does not interfere with shifter movement through all gears
3. Test power window switches (if applicable) to confirm proper electrical connection

Verification

• Operate shifter through all gear positions to verify smooth movement without binding or interference from the new boot
• Check that the boot remains properly seated at both top and bottom during shifter operation
• Inspect trim panel fitment to ensure all clips are engaged and there are no gaps or misalignment
• Verify power window switches operate correctly if they were disconnected during the procedure
