Trunk Lid

Removal and installation of the trunk lid assembly from the body hinges on a 1992 Dodge Viper, including disconnection of any trunk lighting or release mechanisms.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
2. Open trunk lid fully and prop securely.
3. Place protective blankets over rear bumper and body surfaces adjacent to trunk opening.
4. Disconnect negative battery cable to disable any trunk lighting circuits.

Procedure

   Access trunk lid interior
   From inside the trunk, locate the trunk lid interior trim panel. This panel covers the underside of the trunk lid and is typically held by push-pin clips. Gently pry the trim panel starting at the edges using a trim tool to release the clips. Remove the panel to expose the trunk lid hinge bolts and any wiring connections.

   Disconnect trunk lighting
   Locate the trunk light electrical connector (if equipped). Press the locking tab and disconnect the wiring harness from the trunk light assembly. Ensure the wiring is routed clear of the hinge area and will not be pinched during removal.

   Mark hinge positions
   Using a marker or paint pen, carefully trace the outline of each trunk hinge mounting plate where it contacts the trunk lid inner surface. Mark both the left and right hinge positions. These alignment marks are critical for proper reinstallation and gap alignment.

   Position trunk support
   Have an assistant hold the trunk lid in the fully open position, or position adjustable trunk lid support stands under the lid to bear its weight. Ensure the lid is stable and will not fall when the hinge bolts are loosened. The lid must be supported independently of the hinges before removing fasteners.

   Remove trunk hinge bolts
   Using a 13mm socket with extension, remove the 4 bolts securing the trunk lid to the hinges (2 bolts per hinge). The bolts thread into captive nuts in the hinge assemblies. Start all bolts slightly before fully removing to maintain lid position, then remove completely while assistant or stands support the lid weight.

   Remove trunk lid
   With all hinge bolts removed and the lid fully supported, carefully lift the trunk lid straight up and away from the hinge assemblies. Guide the lid clear of the body opening. Move the trunk lid to a padded work surface where it will not be damaged. Inspect the hinge assemblies remaining on the body for wear or damage.

   Inspect and prepare for installation
   If installing a new trunk lid, transfer any necessary hardware from the old lid including the latch striker mechanism, gas strut mounts (if equipped), and trunk light assembly. Clean the hinge mounting surfaces on the new lid. Inspect the weatherstrip seal around the trunk opening and replace if worn or damaged.

   Position new trunk lid
   With the assistance of a helper, position the new or repaired trunk lid onto the hinge assemblies. Align the lid so the hinge mounting holes are accessible and the lid is approximately in the correct position. Have the assistant hold the lid steady while you prepare to install fasteners.

   Align and install hinge bolts
   Align the hinges with the alignment marks made during removal. Start all 4 trunk hinge bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all bolts are started, tighten them evenly to specification using a torque wrench. Torque all bolts to specification using a torque wrench.

    Reconnect trunk lighting
    Route the trunk light wiring harness back through the lid structure. Connect the electrical connector to the trunk light assembly, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure and will not pull loose during normal trunk operation.

    Reinstall interior trim panel
    Position the trunk lid interior trim panel back into place. Align all mounting holes with the push-pin clip locations. Press firmly on each clip location until the clips snap into place. Verify the panel is fully seated and does not rattle.

    Adjust trunk lid alignment
    Close the trunk lid and check the gap alignment around all edges. The lid should sit flush with the body panels with even gaps on all sides. If adjustment is needed, loosen the hinge bolts slightly, shift the lid position as needed, and retighten to specification. Repeat until proper alignment is achieved. Check that the trunk latch engages properly with the striker and holds the lid closed securely.

Reassembly

1. Installation is the reverse of removal with attention to alignment marks and torque specifications.
2. Reconnect negative battery cable after all work is complete.
3. Test trunk light operation if equipped before closing all panels.

Verification

• Open and close the trunk lid several times to verify smooth operation without binding.
• Check that all gaps around the trunk lid perimeter are even and consistent with adjacent body panels.
• Verify the trunk latch engages securely and the lid does not rattle when closed.
• Confirm trunk light operates correctly when lid is opened (if equipped).
• Inspect weatherstrip seal contact all around the trunk opening for proper compression.
