Washer Pump

Remove and replace the windshield washer pump located in the washer fluid reservoir in the front compartment of the 1992 Dodge Viper.

• Washer pump grommet (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

• Windshield washer fluid — 2 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure engine is cool
2. Open hood and secure in raised position
3. Locate washer fluid reservoir on right (passenger) side of front compartment
4. Place drain pan beneath work area to catch spilled washer fluid

Procedure

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the washer pump at the bottom of the reservoir. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the pump terminals. The connector may be stiff; wiggle gently while pulling if needed.

   Disconnect washer hose
   Locate the rubber washer hose connected to the pump outlet at the bottom of the reservoir. Use needle-nose pliers to compress and slide the hose clamp away from the pump connection point. Pull the hose straight off the pump barb fitting. Washer fluid will drain from the hose; direct it into the drain pan.

   Remove washer pump from reservoir
   The pump is retained in the reservoir by a rubber grommet. Grasp the pump body firmly and pull straight down and out of the reservoir with a twisting motion to break the grommet seal. Expect additional washer fluid to drain from the reservoir opening as the pump is removed. Drain remaining fluid from pump into drain pan.

   Inspect grommet and reservoir
   Examine the rubber grommet that seals the pump to the reservoir. If the grommet is cracked, hardened, or torn, remove it from the reservoir and replace with new. Check the reservoir opening for debris or damage. Clean the mounting area with a shop towel if needed.

   Install new washer pump
   Ensure the rubber grommet is properly seated in the reservoir opening. Lubricate the pump body and grommet lightly with washer fluid or water. Align the new pump with the reservoir opening and push firmly with a twisting motion until the pump seats completely in the grommet. The pump should be secure with no movement.

   Reconnect washer hose
   Push the rubber washer hose onto the pump outlet barb fitting until it bottoms against the pump body. Slide the hose clamp back into position over the hose and barb connection. Ensure the clamp is positioned approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose.

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector onto the pump terminals until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully locked.

   Refill washer reservoir
   Fill the washer fluid reservoir with windshield washer fluid to the FULL mark. Add fluid gradually until it reaches the proper level; do not rely on a fixed quantity as reservoir capacity varies. Avoid overfilling.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and hose clamps are properly positioned
2. Verify no leaks around pump grommet seal or hose connection
3. Close hood after verification is complete

Verification

• Turn ignition to RUN position (engine does not need to start)
• Activate windshield washer system and verify fluid sprays onto windshield from both nozzles
• Listen for smooth pump operation without grinding or cavitation noises
• Check for leaks at pump grommet seal and hose connection while pump is running
• Verify pump shuts off when washer control is released
• Recheck reservoir fluid level and top off if needed after testing
