Power Window Regulator - Rear

Replace the rear power window regulator on a 1992 Dodge Viper, including door panel removal, window stabilization, regulator detachment, and reassembly with proper alignment.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Lower the rear window to approximately mid-travel position for easiest access to regulator bolts
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to discharge any residual power in the electrical system
4. Gather all tools and parts before beginning to minimize door-open time

Procedure

   Remove door panel fasteners
   Using the T25 Torx driver, remove the door panel mounting screws. There are 3 screws total: one in the door pull/armrest area, one near the interior door handle, and one at the bottom rear corner of the panel. Note the location of each screw for proper reinstallation.

   Detach door handle trim and release door panel
   Carefully pry the interior door handle trim bezel using a trim panel removal tool. The bezel snaps into place with clips. Once removed, use the trim tool to release the door panel retaining clips around the perimeter of the panel, working from the bottom edge upward. There are approximately 8-10 clips holding the panel. Lift the panel upward once all clips are released to disengage it from the window sill.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Reach behind the door panel and locate the power window switch connector. Press the locking tab and disconnect the harness. Also disconnect the power door lock switch connector if equipped. Set the door panel aside in a safe location where it will not be damaged.

   Peel back water barrier
   Carefully peel back the plastic water barrier (vapor shield) from the door frame. Start at one corner and work slowly to avoid tearing. The barrier is typically adhesive-backed. You may need to carefully warm the adhesive with your hands to release it without damage for reuse.

   Disconnect window motor electrical connector
   Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the locking tab and disconnect the harness from the motor. Use a flashlight to clearly see the connector location and orientation.

   Secure window glass in raised position
   Manually raise the window glass to the full-up position. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame, applying tape from the top of the glass to the exterior door frame. This prevents the glass from dropping when the regulator is disconnected. Apply at least two tape strips for security.

   Detach window glass from regulator
   Using a 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the window glass channel to the regulator lift mechanism. These bolts are accessed through the service holes in the inner door frame. Support the glass as you remove the bolts to prevent shifting.

   Remove regulator mounting fasteners
   Using T30 Torx driver, remove the 3 regulator mounting bolts that secure the regulator assembly to the inner door frame. Note the positions: one bolt near the motor mounting area, one at the upper track, and one at the lower track. Keep these bolts organized for reinstallation.

   Extract regulator assembly from door
   Carefully manipulate the regulator assembly to disengage the roller guides from the window glass channel track. Rotate and angle the regulator as needed to maneuver it through the largest service opening in the inner door frame. The regulator spring mechanism may still be under tension, so control the assembly as you remove it to prevent sudden movement.

    Install new regulator assembly
    Position the new regulator assembly and guide it through the service opening in the inner door frame. Align the roller guides with the window glass channel track. Maneuver the regulator into position with the mounting holes aligned to the door frame. Start all three T30 Torx mounting bolts by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment.

    Tighten regulator mounting bolts
    Using the T30 Torx driver and torque wrench, tighten the three regulator mounting bolts to 27.0 Nm (20 lb-ft) in a sequential pattern: tighten the center bolt first, then the upper bolt, then the lower bolt. This ensures even loading and proper alignment of the regulator mechanism.

    Reconnect window glass to regulator
    Remove the masking tape securing the glass. Carefully lower the glass and align the glass channel mounting holes with the regulator lift mechanism. Install the two 10mm bolts hand-tight first, then torque to specification. Ensure the glass sits squarely in the channel before final tightening.

    Connect electrical and test operation
    Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal. With the door panel still removed, test the window operation through several full up-and-down cycles. Verify smooth operation with no binding, unusual noise, or misalignment. The window should seat properly in the up position and lower completely without obstruction. Disconnect the battery again before proceeding. Note: Verify the window operates correctly through its full travel from the switch.

    Reinstall water barrier and door panel
    Press the water barrier back into position, ensuring complete adhesion around all edges to maintain the moisture seal. Reconnect the door panel electrical connectors for the window and lock switches. Position the door panel by engaging the top edge over the window sill, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Install the three T25 Torx door panel screws in their original locations. Snap the interior door handle trim bezel back into place.

    Final system verification
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Test the window operation from both the door switch and master switch (if applicable). Verify the window auto-down function operates correctly if equipped. Check that the window seals properly against the weatherstripping in the full-up position and retracts completely when lowered. Test the door lock switch to ensure proper function after reconnection.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
2. Verify the water barrier is properly sealed around all edges to prevent moisture intrusion
3. Check that all door panel clips are fully engaged before driving - a loose panel may rattle or shift
4. Confirm window operation is smooth and the glass aligns properly in both up and down positions

Verification

• Operate the window through 5-10 complete cycles to verify smooth, quiet operation with no binding
• Verify the window seats flush with the door frame in the up position and seals properly against weatherstripping
• Check that the window lowers completely without obstruction
• Confirm no rattles or loose components when closing the door firmly
• Test that all door panel switches function correctly after reassembly
