Windshield Molding

Remove and replace the windshield molding trim on a 1992 Dodge Viper, including removal of corner clips and adhesive retention components.

• Windshield adhesive molding tape × 1 — 3M 08509 or equivalent

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure ignition is off
2. Clean windshield and surrounding area with glass cleaner to identify molding attachment points
3. Apply masking tape along painted hood and cowl edges adjacent to molding to protect finish
4. Inspect existing molding for crack or damage patterns to determine removal strategy

Procedure

   Remove Upper Windshield Molding
   Starting at one upper corner, insert plastic trim tool between the molding and windshield glass. The upper molding is retained by adhesive tape along its length. Gently pry upward to break the adhesive bond, working slowly across the top of the windshield. If molding is brittle or resists, apply gentle heat with heat gun to soften adhesive. Once one end is free, pull molding away from glass at a 45-degree angle while continuing to release adhesive along the entire length.

   Release Upper Corner Clips
   At each upper corner where the molding meets the A-pillar, locate the corner clips that secure the molding ends. These clips typically have a tab or release mechanism visible from the side. Use the plastic trim tool to depress the clip tabs while pulling the molding end free. Note the orientation of clips for reinstallation - the clips may be molding-specific and not interchangeable between upper and side pieces.

   Remove Driver Side Windshield Molding
   Starting at the top where the side molding meets the already-removed upper section, insert trim tool between molding and glass. Work downward along the A-pillar, releasing adhesive tape retention. At the lower corner near the cowl, locate and release the lower corner clip using the same technique as the upper clips. Pull molding away from glass once all retention points are released.

   Remove Passenger Side Windshield Molding
   Repeat the removal process for the passenger side molding, starting at the top and working downward. Release the lower corner clip at the cowl. Remove the molding completely once all adhesive and clips are released.

   Clean Windshield and Molding Surfaces
   Using denatured alcohol or adhesive remover on a microfiber towel, clean all old adhesive residue from the windshield glass perimeter. Work carefully to avoid getting chemicals on painted surfaces. If old adhesive is stubborn, apply adhesive remover and let sit for 2-3 minutes before wiping. Ensure glass surface is completely clean and dry before proceeding.

   Inspect and Prepare Corner Clips
   Examine all 4 corner clips removed from the old molding. Check for cracks, broken tabs, or worn retention features. Replace any damaged clips with new OEM parts. If reusing clips, clean them thoroughly with alcohol to remove old adhesive. Verify that clip mounting holes in the body/A-pillar are clear of debris.

   Apply Adhesive Tape to New Molding
   Apply new windshield molding adhesive tape to the back side of each new molding piece. For the upper molding, run a continuous strip along the entire length, positioned to contact the glass when installed. For side moldings, apply tape along the full length ensuring even coverage. Do not remove the tape backing yet.

   Install Corner Clips
   Install corner clips into their mounting positions at all four corners (two upper corners at A-pillar/header junction, two lower corners at cowl/A-pillar junction). Press clips firmly into place until they seat with an audible click. Verify clips are secure by attempting to pull them free - they should not move.

   Install Upper Windshield Molding
   Remove backing from adhesive tape on upper molding. Starting at one corner, align the molding end with its corner clip and press into place. Working across the top of the windshield, press the molding firmly against the glass, ensuring consistent contact along the entire length. Engage the opposite corner clip to secure the other end. Apply firm pressure along the full length for 30 seconds to ensure proper adhesive bond.

    Install Side Moldings
    Remove backing from adhesive tape on both side moldings. Starting with the driver side, align the top end with its corner clip where it meets the upper molding. Press into place and engage the clip. Work downward along the A-pillar, pressing molding firmly against glass. Engage the lower corner clip. Repeat for passenger side molding. Ensure all corner transitions are flush and gaps are consistent.

    Final Seating and Cleanup
    Walk around the vehicle and apply firm pressure to all molding sections, ensuring complete adhesive contact. Pay special attention to corner transitions. Remove all masking tape from painted surfaces. Clean any fingerprints or residue from molding and glass with glass cleaner.

Reassembly

1. Allow adhesive to cure for at least 1 hour before driving at highway speeds
2. Avoid washing vehicle or exposing molding to heavy water spray for 24 hours to ensure full adhesive cure
3. If any corner clip does not seat properly, remove the molding section and verify clip is fully installed before reapplying molding

Verification

• Visually inspect all molding sections for consistent gaps and flush alignment with body surfaces
• Gently tug on each molding section to verify adhesive bond - molding should not lift or separate from glass
• Check all four corner clips by sight - no gaps should be visible between molding ends and clips
• Verify no adhesive residue or fingerprints remain on glass or molding surfaces
• Confirm molding does not interfere with windshield wiper operation by cycling wipers through full range
