HID Ballast

Replace the failed HID headlight ballast on a 2005 Dodge Viper, requiring access to the headlight assembly area and electrical connector service.

Preparation

1. Verify which headlight ballast has failed (driver or passenger side)
2. Ensure engine is cool and vehicle is on level ground
3. Open hood and secure in fully open position
4. Identify the failed ballast location - ballasts are typically mounted near the headlight assemblies in the front fender area

Procedure

   Disconnect battery negative terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the battery. Wait at least 2 minutes to allow the HID ballast capacitors to fully discharge before proceeding.

   Access headlight assembly area
   From the engine compartment, locate the headlight assembly on the affected side. The HID ballast is mounted behind or adjacent to the headlight assembly. Note that 2005 Dodge Viper headlamps were not factory-equipped with HID, so the ballast may be part of an aftermarket retrofit kit with non-standard mounting. You may need to remove the air intake duct or reposition nearby hoses for better access. Note the routing of any components moved for reassembly.

   Remove wheelwell liner fasteners (if required for access)
   Access on the Viper is generally from the engine compartment rather than through a wheelwell liner. If your particular installation requires side/below access, turn the steering wheel fully to the opposite side of the repair, then locate and remove any plastic push-pin fasteners securing the front portion of the fender liner. Pull the liner back to expose the rear of the headlight assembly and ballast mounting area. Check for both push-pin style fasteners and any threaded fasteners securing the liner.

   Disconnect HID ballast electrical connectors
   Locate the HID ballast unit - a rectangular metal or plastic box approximately 4x3 inches. Identify the input power connector (from vehicle harness) and the output connector (to HID bulb). Press the release tab on each connector and carefully pull straight out to disconnect. Note the orientation and routing of both connectors.

   Remove ballast mounting hardware
   Locate the ballast mounting bracket. The ballast mounting method is unverified for this vehicle and may vary if this is an aftermarket retrofit; note the exact number and type of fasteners securing the ballast to its bracket before removal. Remove these fasteners completely and retain them for reinstallation. Note the exact mounting orientation and any ground wire connections that may be present.

   Remove failed ballast
   Once all fasteners and connectors are removed, carefully extract the ballast from its mounting location. Maneuver the unit through the access area, being careful not to damage surrounding components or wiring. Compare the failed ballast to the new unit to verify correct replacement part.

   Install new HID ballast
   Position the new ballast in the mounting location in the exact same orientation as the original. Ensure any ground wire terminals are positioned between the ballast mounting bracket and body/chassis. Start all mounting fasteners by hand before tightening.

   Reconnect ballast electrical connectors
   Connect the input power connector from the vehicle harness to the ballast. You should hear or feel a positive click when fully seated. Connect the output connector from the ballast to the HID bulb connector. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to connector terminals if available to prevent corrosion. Verify both connectors are fully locked.

   Reinstall wheelwell liner (if removed)
   If the wheelwell liner was disturbed, position it back in place ensuring all edges are properly aligned. Reinstall all push-pin fasteners and any threaded fasteners that were removed. Verify the liner is secure and not interfering with tire rotation.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post. Tighten the battery terminal bolt securely to specification (typically about 5-7 ft-lbs / 60-84 in-lbs — verify against OEM data). Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine) and activate the headlights. Verify the repaired HID headlight illuminates and cycles through its initial startup, reaching stable full brightness within roughly 15-30 seconds.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
2. Verify wheelwell liner fasteners are secure and liner does not contact tire
3. Confirm all components moved for access are returned to original positions
4. Check that no tools or parts were left in the engine compartment or fender area

Verification

• With engine off and ignition ON, activate headlights and verify both low and high beams illuminate properly on the repaired side
• Allow HID system to warm up for 30 seconds and verify stable, bright white light output matching the opposite side
• Perform a test drive after dark to confirm proper headlight operation and beam pattern
• Check for any warning lights on the instrument cluster related to headlight system
• Verify no unusual noises or odors from the ballast area during operation
