Transmission Fluid Change

This procedure drains and refills the manual transmission fluid on the 2005 Dodge Viper with the Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission, including pan removal and filter service where applicable.

• Transmission pan gasket × 1 — Mopar 04861586AA or equivalent cork gasket
• Transmission drain plug washer × 1 — Use OEM specification if equipped with drain plug

Fluids

• 75W-90 synthetic GL-4 — 4 qt

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake firmly.
2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
3. Allow transmission to cool to ambient temperature if recently driven (minimum 2 hours).
4. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support on jack stands at manufacturer lift points.
5. Verify vehicle is stable and level before working underneath.

Procedure

1. 1

   Access transmission drain area
   Position drain pan beneath transmission. The T56 transmission is bolted to the rear of the engine and extends into the transmission tunnel. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission case; the T56 does not use a removable service pan.

   Drain transmission fluid via drain plug (if equipped)
   Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the T56 transmission case (typically a 3/8" square-drive plug). Remove it and allow fluid to drain completely (approximately 10-15 minutes). Inspect the magnetic plug and washer for damage. This transmission has no service pan, so there is no pan-removal fallback method.

   Remove transmission pan bolts (if no drain plug)
   The T56 does not have a removable service pan. All fluid draining is done through the case-mounted drain plug in Step 2; there is no pan-removal draining method for this transmission.emove final bolts and lower pan.
   ⚠Transmission fluid will spill from pan when bolts are loosened. Keep drain pan positioned to catch fluid and be prepared for sudden flow.

   Inspect and clean transmission pan
   Inspect the magnetic drain plug for metal debris. A small amount of fine metallic paste on the magnet is normal; excessive chunks or shavings may indicate internal wear. Wipe the plug clean before reinstalling. There is no pan or gasket to service on this transmission.

   Inspect transmission filter (if equipped)
   The T56 transmission in the Viper typically does not have a serviceable internal filter like an automatic transmission. If a mesh screen or magnet is visible on the valve body or pan, clean it thoroughly with solvent and reinstall. Do not remove internal components beyond what is accessible with pan removed.

   Install new transmission pan gasket
   This transmission does not use a service pan or pan gasket, so no gasket installation is required. Skip this step.

   Reinstall transmission pan
   This transmission does not use a service pan, so there are no pan bolts to reinstall. Skip this step.

   Reinstall drain plug (if equipped)
   If transmission uses drain plug configuration, install new crush washer on drain plug. Thread drain plug into pan by hand, then tighten to specification. Do not overtighten as this can strip aluminum threads in pan.

   Locate transmission fill plug
   The T56 fill plug is located on the side of the transmission case and typically accepts a 3/8" square drive (ratchet without socket). Verify exact location and plug type against the factory service manual. Clean the area around the fill plug before removal to prevent contamination.

    Fill transmission with fluid
    Remove fill plug using appropriate square-drive tool. Using a fluid transfer pump, add the transmission lubricant specified in the factory service manual for the 2005 Viper T56 (verify exact spec/viscosity). Fill until fluid begins to drip or run out of the fill hole. The correct level is at the bottom of the fill plug hole threads when vehicle is level. Install fill plug and torque to specification once fluid reaches correct level.

    Lower vehicle and verify work
    Lower vehicle from jack stands to ground. Verify transmission pan and fill plug show no signs of leakage. Wipe area clean with shop rag to make future leak detection easier. Start engine and cycle through all gears with clutch depressed, then recheck fluid level after vehicle has run for 2-3 minutes.

Reassembly

1. Transmission pan bolts must be torqued in criss-cross pattern to prevent gasket distortion and leaks.
2. Verify vehicle is level when checking final fluid level, as an incline will give false readings.
3. Dispose of used transmission fluid properly at recycling center or parts store that accepts used oil.

Verification

• Start engine and verify no leaks from transmission pan or drain plug while idling.
• With engine running and vehicle stationary, cycle through all gears with clutch fully depressed.
• Drive vehicle and verify smooth shifting through all gears under light load.
• Recheck transmission pan and fill plug for leaks after 50-100 miles of driving.
• Verify fluid level is at bottom of fill plug threads when vehicle is level and transmission is at operating temperature.
