Transmission Flush

A complete transmission flush service for the 2005 Dodge Viper's Tremec T-56 6-speed manual transmission, including drain, refill, and fluid replacement with proper synthetic GL-4 lubricant.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake firmly
2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
3. Allow transmission to cool to touch if vehicle was recently operated
4. Raise front of vehicle using floor jack at designated front jacking point
5. Secure vehicle on jack stands rated for weight, positioned at manufacturer-specified lift points
6. Verify vehicle stability by gently rocking before proceeding underneath

Procedure

   Locate transmission drain and fill plugs
   Position yourself under the vehicle with adequate lighting. The Tremec T-56 transmission is located behind the engine bell housing. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the transmission case (driver's side, rear section) and the fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission case, approximately mid-height. Clean the area around both plugs with a wire brush to remove debris and road grime.

   Remove fill plug first
   Using the manufacturer-specified plug tool (verify drive type and size against OEM documentation—commonly a square drive on Tremec units), loosen and remove the fill plug from the passenger side of the transmission case. This is done BEFORE draining to ensure the plug is not seized—if you cannot remove the fill plug, you should not drain the transmission. Inspect the fill plug and its sealing washer for damage. Set plug aside with washer.

   Position drain pan and remove drain plug
   Place a fluid drain pan with at least 6 quart capacity directly beneath the transmission drain plug location. Using a 17mm hex socket or wrench, carefully loosen the drain plug. Once loose, quickly remove it by hand while keeping pressure inward to prevent fluid from pouring before you're ready. Allow all transmission fluid to drain completely into the pan. This may take 10-15 minutes for complete drainage.

   Clean and inspect drain plug
   Once fluid has completely drained, remove the drain pan temporarily. Clean the drain plug threads and magnet (if equipped) thoroughly with shop towels. Inspect the plug threads for damage and examine any metal particles on the magnetic portion—a small amount of fine metallic paste is normal, but large metal chips or excessive material may indicate internal transmission wear. Clean the drain plug sealing surface on the transmission case.

   Install drain plug with new washer
   Install a new drain plug gasket or copper crush washer onto the drain plug. Thread the drain plug into the transmission case by hand to ensure proper thread engagement and prevent cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to specification.

   Prepare fluid fill equipment
   Prepare your fluid pump or squeeze bottle with the manufacturer-specified transmission fluid for the Viper T-56 (verify exact specification and rating against OEM service documentation before purchase). Ensure the fluid is at room temperature for easier pumping. Confirm the required fill capacity from the OEM service manual before beginning.

   Fill transmission to proper level
   Insert the fluid pump nozzle or squeeze bottle tip into the fill plug hole on the passenger side of the transmission. Slowly pump or squeeze fluid into the transmission until fluid begins to overflow or drip steadily from the fill hole. The transmission is properly filled when fluid reaches the bottom of the fill plug threads. This will take approximately 4 quarts of fluid. Allow a moment for fluid to settle and top off if level drops.

   Install fill plug with new washer
   Wipe any excess fluid from around the fill plug opening with a clean shop towel. Install a new fill plug gasket or copper crush washer onto the fill plug. Thread the fill plug into the transmission case by hand until snug, then use a torque wrench to tighten to specification. Note: torqueRefs": [ "Transmission Fill Plug" ]

   Clean work area and inspect for leaks
   Wipe down the transmission case exterior to remove any spilled fluid. Inspect both the drain plug and fill plug areas carefully for signs of leakage. Clean your tools and dispose of used transmission fluid according to local environmental regulations—most auto parts stores and service centers accept used transmission fluid for recycling.

    Lower vehicle and perform final checks
    Carefully raise the vehicle slightly to remove jack stands, then lower completely to the ground. Remove wheel chocks. Start the engine and allow it to idle briefly, then turn off. Underneath the vehicle, perform a final inspection of both drain and fill plugs for any signs of seepage or leakage around the plug areas.

Reassembly

1. Ensure both drain and fill plugs are torqued to specification with new sealing washers installed
2. Verify no fluid leaks are present at either plug location before returning vehicle to service
3. Record the service date and mileage for future maintenance tracking

Verification

• Start engine and let idle for 1-2 minutes, then shut off and check for leaks at drain and fill plug locations
• Test drive vehicle through all gears to ensure smooth shifting operation—new fluid should provide improved shift quality
• After test drive, re-inspect both plugs for any signs of seepage while transmission is at operating temperature
• Check that exactly 4 quarts of GL-4 rated 75W-90 synthetic fluid was used during the fill process
