Airbag - Driver

This procedure removes and replaces the driver airbag module in a 2008 Dodge Viper. This is a safety-critical system requiring proper disarming, handling, and reconnection to prevent accidental deployment or system malfunction.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake.
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition.
3. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal. Secure cable away from battery post.
4. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.
5. Ensure the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position before beginning work.

Procedure

1. 1

   Access driver airbag module fasteners
   From the rear of the steering wheel, locate the airbag module retention fasteners. On the 2008 Viper, the driver airbag module is retained by fasteners (commonly Torx-type) accessible from the rear of the steering wheel; verify the exact count and access locations against Mopar service documentation before proceeding, as some Viper airbags use spring-clip retention rather than side Torx screws. These fasteners secure the airbag module to the steering wheel structure.

   Remove airbag module fasteners
   Using the correct Torx driver for the 2008 Viper airbag fasteners (verify exact size against Mopar service documentation), remove both airbag module retention fasteners completely. Support the airbag module from the front with your other hand as you remove the second fastener to prevent it from falling.
   ⚠Support the airbag module as you remove the final fastener. Do not allow it to hang by the electrical connectors.

   Separate airbag module from steering wheel
   Carefully pull the airbag module straight away from the steering wheel hub. The module should separate once the fasteners are removed. Pull it far enough to access the electrical connectors on the back of the module (typically 4-6 inches of clearance needed).

   Disconnect airbag electrical connector
   Locate the primary airbag connector on the back of the module. This is typically a yellow connector with a locking tab. Press the locking tab or release mechanism and carefully disconnect the connector from the airbag module. If equipped with a horn connector, disconnect it as well (typically a separate smaller connector).
   ⚠Handle all airbag connectors gently. Do not pull on wires; pull only on the connector body itself.

   Remove airbag module from vehicle
   With all electrical connections disconnected, remove the airbag module from the vehicle. Immediately place it on a clean, stable surface with the airbag cushion (deployment side) facing UP. Never place the module face-down or allow anything to rest on top of the airbag cushion.
   ⚠️The removed airbag is still a live pyrotechnic device. Store it in a safe location away from heat, sparks, or electrical sources. Keep airbag cushion facing up at all times.

   Inspect steering wheel connector and clock spring
   With the airbag removed, inspect the clock spring connector and wiring for any signs of damage, corrosion, or wear. Check that the clock spring is centered (steering wheel should still be in straight-ahead position). Do not rotate the steering wheel with the airbag removed unless the clock spring is locked or you are certain of its centering.

   Prepare new airbag module
   Remove the new airbag module from its packaging. Keep it in the protective packaging until ready to install. Inspect the new module for any shipping damage and verify the connector configuration matches the original module.

   Connect electrical connectors to new airbag module
   Position the new airbag module near the steering wheel. Connect the primary airbag connector (yellow connector) to the module, ensuring it locks firmly into place with an audible click. If equipped, connect the horn connector as well. Verify both connectors are fully seated and locked.

   Position and secure new airbag module
   Carefully align the new airbag module with the steering wheel hub, ensuring no wires are pinched or trapped. Press the module firmly against the steering wheel until it seats flush. Install both Torx fasteners and tighten to the Mopar-specified torque for the 2008 Viper driver airbag module (verify value against OEM service documentation). Tighten fasteners in an alternating pattern to ensure even seating of the module.
   ⚠Ensure no wires are pinched between the airbag module and steering wheel. Pinched wires can cause system malfunction or inadvertent deployment.

    Reconnect battery and clear codes
    Ensure no one is in the vehicle. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine). The airbag warning light should illuminate for approximately 6-8 seconds during self-test, then extinguish. Use a scan tool with airbag/SRS capability (Chrysler-compatible, e.g. DRB III / wiTECH-equivalent for this era) to read and clear any stored airbag system fault codes. If the airbag light remains illuminated after clearing codes, there is a system fault that must be diagnosed before returning the vehicle to service.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly is performed in reverse order of removal, as detailed in the installation steps above.
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully locked and seated before securing the airbag module.
3. Ensure both airbag module fasteners are tightened securely and evenly.

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position. Airbag warning light should illuminate for 6-8 seconds during system self-test, then extinguish completely.
• Use an OBD-II scan tool to verify no active or pending airbag system fault codes are present.
• Test horn function to verify horn circuit is properly connected (if horn button is integrated into airbag module).
• With engine running, turn steering wheel lock-to-lock to verify clock spring operation and that no new fault codes set.
• If airbag warning light remains illuminated or any codes are present, diagnose and repair before returning vehicle to service. DO NOT drive the vehicle with an illuminated airbag warning light.
