Airbag Module/Computer

Remove and replace the airbag control module (ACM) located under the center console area, including battery disconnect, system disarming, and post-installation diagnostic verification.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure transmission is in Park (manual in neutral with parking brake applied)
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from vehicle entirely
3. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal, then disconnect positive battery terminal
4. Wait minimum 2 minutes for SRS system capacitors to fully discharge - do not skip this wait period
5. Verify all doors are unlocked manually (power locks will not function with battery disconnected)

Procedure

   Remove center console front section
   Starting at the front of the center console near the shifter boot, locate and remove the Torx fasteners securing the front console section. Remove the console fasteners (count and Torx/screw size vary - verify against the factory service manual before removal). Carefully lift the front section upward, noting any clips along the sides that may require gentle prying with panel tool.

   Disconnect console electrical connectors
   With front console section loosened, identify all electrical connectors visible underneath. These may include power outlet connectors and any auxiliary switches. Press connector locking tabs and disconnect each harness. Set front console section aside in a clean area where it will not be stepped on.

   Remove center console rear section
   Locate the Torx fasteners securing the rear portion of the center console. Remove the rear console fasteners (verify exact count against the factory service manual before removal). The console in the Viper is a multi-piece assembly - do not force sections that remain connected. Once fasteners are removed, lift rear section clear of the tunnel area.

   Locate airbag control module
   With the console removed, locate the airbag control module (ACM). On the 2008 Viper the ACM is typically mounted to the floor/transmission tunnel beneath the center console area - verify exact location against the factory service manual before proceeding. The ACM is a rectangular metal box approximately 4x6 inches with a large yellow multi-pin connector attached. Note the exact mounting orientation and connector routing before proceeding.

   Disconnect airbag module connector
   Identify the SRS connector(s) on the airbag module (commonly yellow, but verify against the vehicle). Note there may be more than one connector. This connector has a secondary locking mechanism (typically a red or yellow slider or tab). Slide or lift the secondary lock to the unlocked position first. Then press the primary connector lock tab and carefully pull the connector straight away from the module. Do not twist or rock the connector excessively.

   Remove airbag module mounting fasteners
   Remove the fasteners securing the airbag module to the floor pan or mounting bracket (typically 2 or 3 nuts or bolts). Verify exact count, type, and size against the factory service manual before removal. Support the module with one hand while removing the final fastener to prevent it from dropping.

   Remove airbag control module
   Carefully lift the airbag module away from its mounting location. Handle only by the metal housing, avoiding contact with the connector pins or any internal components visible through the connector opening. Place the removed module in an anti-static bag if available, and store in a safe location away from heat and moisture.

   Inspect mounting location and wiring
   Examine the mounting surface for corrosion, damage, or debris. Inspect the vehicle-side SRS connector for any bent pins, corrosion, or damage to the connector body or wiring. Check that the connector locking mechanisms move freely. If corrosion is present, clean with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry completely.

   Install new airbag control module
   Position the new airbag module in the exact mounting location documented during removal. Ensure any locating pins or alignment features engage correctly. Install the mounting fasteners (verify count against the factory manual) and tighten each to the manufacturer-specified torque. If no spec is available, tighten firmly without forcing - do not over-torque these small fasteners.

    Connect airbag module connector
    Align the yellow SRS connector with the module socket, ensuring correct orientation (connector will only fit one way). Push connector straight onto module until the primary lock clicks audibly and firmly. Then slide or press the secondary lock mechanism to the fully locked position. Verify connection is secure by attempting to pull connector away - it should not release.

    Reinstall center console sections
    Reinstall the rear center console section first, aligning all mounting points and installing Torx fasteners finger-tight initially. Then position the front console section, reconnecting all electrical connectors for power outlets and switches. Press connectors until they click. Install all front console fasteners. Tighten all console fasteners in sequence, working front to rear, ensuring console sits flush and does not bind against shift lever or other components.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect positive battery terminal first, then negative battery terminal. Ensure terminals are clean and connections are tight. Do not turn ignition on yet.

    Program and verify airbag module
    Connect OBD-II scan tool with SRS capability to the vehicle diagnostic port. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Use scan tool to access SRS module and perform VIN programming/configuration procedure specific to the replacement module - this typically requires dealer-level or professional scan tool capability. After programming, clear all SRS fault codes. Verify no new codes set immediately after clearing.
14. 14

    Perform SRS system self-test
    With scan tool still connected, command an SRS system self-test if available in the scan tool functions. Monitor scan tool for any faults reported during self-test. Start the engine and observe the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster - it should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If light remains on or flashes, retrieve codes and diagnose before returning vehicle to service.

Reassembly

1. Console installation mirrors removal: rear section first, then front section with all electrical connectors reattached
2. Verify all console fasteners are installed and tight - missing fasteners can allow console movement that may interfere with shifter operation
3. Test all console-mounted accessories (power outlets, switches) for proper function before considering job complete

Verification

• Airbag warning light performs normal bulb check (6-second illumination) then extinguishes with engine running
• Scan tool shows no active or pending SRS fault codes
• Scan tool confirms airbag module is communicating and shows 'ready' or 'normal' status
• All console panels are secure with no rattles or misalignment
• Shift lever operates through all gears without interference from console
