Airbag - Side

Remove and replace the side airbag module(s) in a 2008 Dodge Viper, including proper disarming of the supplemental restraint system and seat component access.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition.
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive battery terminal. Isolate both cables away from battery posts using non-conductive material or routing away from battery area.
4. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes for airbag system backup capacitor to fully discharge.
5. Position seat to be serviced in the full-forward position for easier access to seat mounting bolts.
6. Verify replacement airbag module is correct part number for the specific seat (driver or passenger) being serviced.

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Locate the seat mounting bolts securing the seat track to the floor (count and type must be verified against the factory service manual). These are typically Torx or hex-head bolts accessible at the front and rear of each seat rail. Remove all mounting bolts. Locate the electrical connector(s) under the seat - there will be at least one connector for the side airbag and seat belt pretensioner system, and possibly additional connectors for power seat functions if equipped. Press the connector locking tabs and disconnect all harnesses. Carefully lift the seat assembly out of the vehicle. Place seat on a clean, protected work surface.

   Access side airbag module
   With the seat removed and positioned upright on the work surface, examine the outboard side of the seat backrest. The side airbag is integrated into the outer bolster trim panel. Locate the trim fasteners securing the outboard seat backrest cover - these may be hidden clips accessed from the rear of the backrest or fasteners accessed after removing a trim cap. On the Viper seat design, check for fasteners along the lower edge of the backrest and at the upper corners. Carefully release or remove fasteners to begin separating the outboard trim panel from the seat frame.

   Remove seat backrest trim panel
   Once fasteners are released, carefully work the outboard seat backrest trim panel away from the seat frame. The panel may be retained by additional clips along the perimeter. Use non-marring trim tools to release clips without damaging the trim or seat foam. Work slowly and methodically around the panel perimeter. The side airbag module is integrated into this trim panel and will remain attached during removal. Support the weight of the panel and airbag assembly as you separate it from the seat frame.

   Disconnect side airbag electrical connector
   With the trim panel and integrated airbag module now accessible, locate the airbag module electrical connector. This is typically a yellow connector with a positive locking mechanism. The connector will route from the airbag module through the seat frame to the main harness beneath the seat. Carefully press the locking tab or slide the locking mechanism (connector designs vary - Viper may use a sliding lock or button-release style) and disconnect the airbag connector. Handle the connector gently and avoid pulling on the wiring.

   Separate airbag module from trim panel
   The side airbag module is secured to the back of the seat trim panel, typically with fasteners or integral mounting tabs. Examine the back side of the trim panel to identify how the airbag module is attached. Remove fasteners (likely Torx screws or clips) securing the airbag module to the trim panel. Carefully separate the airbag module from the trim panel, noting the orientation and any alignment features for installation of the new module. Inspect the trim panel for any damage that may have necessitated the airbag replacement.

   Install new side airbag module to trim panel
   Position the new side airbag module to the seat trim panel in the same orientation as the original. Align any locating tabs or features. Secure the new airbag module to the trim panel using the original fasteners. Ensure the airbag module sits flush and secure against the trim panel backing without any gaps or misalignment. Verify the deployment direction indicator on the module (typically an arrow or 'UP' marking) faces the correct direction - the airbag must deploy outward toward the door.

   Reconnect airbag electrical connector
   Route the airbag module connector through the seat frame in the original path. Connect the yellow airbag connector to the seat harness connector, ensuring it seats fully. You should hear or feel a positive click when the connector locks. Verify the locking mechanism is fully engaged - attempt to gently pull the connectors apart to confirm they are locked. Ensure no wiring is pinched or under tension.

   Reinstall seat backrest trim panel
   Position the trim panel (with integrated airbag module now installed) back onto the seat frame. Align the panel with the seat structure and any locating features. Press the panel firmly into place to engage any perimeter clips. Install all fasteners that were removed in step 2, working in the reverse order of removal. Ensure the trim panel sits flush and uniform against the seat backrest with no gaps or misalignment. Verify the airbag module is not binding against any seat frame components.

   Reinstall seat assembly in vehicle
   Carefully lift the seat assembly and position it into the vehicle over the seat track mounting locations. Reconnect all electrical connectors under the seat - airbag/pretensioner connector(s) and any power seat connectors if equipped. Ensure all connectors lock positively. Align the seat tracks with the floor mounting holes. Install all seat mounting bolts finger-tight first, then tighten in a cross pattern. Torque to specification if known, or tighten firmly with hand tools.

    Restore electrical power and clear codes
    Reconnect the positive battery terminal first, then the negative battery terminal. Tighten battery terminal clamps securely. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. The airbag system warning light on the instrument cluster should illuminate for approximately 6-8 seconds during the system self-check, then extinguish. If the airbag warning light remains illuminated or flashes, this indicates a fault code is stored and the system requires diagnostic scan tool access to identify the issue. Do not operate the vehicle until the airbag system passes self-diagnostics and the warning light functions normally.

Reassembly

1. Seat mounting bolt torque specifications should be verified against factory service manual - typical seat track bolts on performance vehicles are torqued to 35-45 ft-lbs, but confirm for this platform.
2. Test seat adjustments (fore/aft, recline) to ensure no interference with airbag wiring or trim panels.
3. Perform a final visual inspection of the seat trim panel to ensure proper fit and finish with no gaps or misalignment.

Verification

• With ignition ON (engine off), verify the airbag warning light illuminates briefly during self-check (approximately 6-8 seconds) then extinguishes completely.
• If the airbag warning light stays on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, the system has detected a fault. Use a compatible scan tool to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes and address the issue before returning vehicle to service.
• Physically inspect the seat trim panel and verify it is securely attached with no loose fasteners or gaps.
• Move the seat through its full range of adjustment to confirm no binding, interference, or unusual resistance.
• Verify all seat functions operate normally (recline, fore/aft adjustment, power functions if equipped).
• If possible, have the airbag system professionally scanned after repair to confirm proper module communication and absence of fault codes, even if the warning light appears normal.
