Battery

Remove and replace the 12-volt battery on a 2008 Dodge Viper, including terminal disconnection, hold-down removal, and installation of new battery.

• Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads (optional) × 2 — Generic felt pads

Preparation

1. Ensure vehicle is parked on level surface with ignition off and key removed
2. Open trunk and locate battery on driver side of trunk compartment
3. Verify replacement battery matches Group 34 specifications (minimum 800 CCA recommended for 8.4L V10)
4. Have radio security code available if applicable

Procedure

1. 1

   Access battery in trunk
   Open trunk fully. Battery is located in the trunk compartment. Remove any trunk trim, carpet, or cover panel as needed to access the battery on the 2008 Viper (verify exact location and access against factory service manual).

   Disconnect negative terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (black, marked with '-' symbol) battery terminal bolt. Turn counterclockwise approximately 3-4 turns until loose. Remove the terminal cable from the battery post and position it away from the battery, ensuring it cannot accidentally contact the post.

   Disconnect positive terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen the positive (red, marked with '+' symbol) battery terminal bolt. Turn counterclockwise until loose. Remove the terminal cable from the battery post. Keep positive cable isolated from any metal surfaces.

   Remove battery hold-down
   Locate the battery hold-down bracket spanning across the top of the battery. Using a 13mm socket, remove the hold-down bolt(s) securing the bracket. Remove the hold-down bracket and set aside with hardware.

   Remove old battery
   Lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Battery weighs approximately 40-50 lbs, so use proper lifting technique. Inspect battery tray for corrosion, debris, or damage.

   Clean battery tray and terminals
   If corrosion is present on battery tray, clean with baking soda and water solution, then dry thoroughly. Use battery terminal cleaner or wire brush to clean both cable terminals (internal contact surfaces) and remove any corrosion. Ensure terminals are bright and clean for good electrical contact.

   Install new battery
   Place new battery into battery tray, ensuring it is fully seated and oriented so the positive and negative posts align with the existing cable routing (match orientation of the original battery). Verify battery sits flush in tray without rocking.

   Install battery hold-down
   Position hold-down bracket across top of battery. Install and hand-tighten the 13mm hold-down bolt(s). Torque to specification using torque wrench. Battery should be secure with no movement when firmly pushed.

   Connect positive terminal
   Place positive (red) terminal cable onto positive battery post. Ensure terminal is fully seated on post. Install terminal bolt and hand-tighten. Using 10mm socket and torque wrench, torque terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can crack the battery terminal.
   ⚠Do not exceed specified torque - overtightening will crack battery terminal and damage battery.

    Connect negative terminal
    Place negative (black) terminal cable onto negative battery post. Ensure terminal is fully seated on post. Install terminal bolt and hand-tighten. Using 10mm socket and torque wrench, torque terminal bolt to specification.

    Apply terminal protection
    If desired, apply battery terminal protector spray or install anti-corrosion felt pads to both terminals to prevent future corrosion. This is optional but recommended for longevity.

Reassembly

1. No additional reassembly required - battery installation is complete
2. Ensure all tools are removed from trunk area before closing

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) - verify dashboard lights illuminate normally
• Start engine - should crank and start normally without hesitation
• Verify all electrical systems function (lights, radio, windows, climate control)
• Check that battery terminals are tight and do not rotate or move when gently twisted by hand
• Reset clock and radio presets as needed
• If check engine light or other warning lights appear after battery replacement, they may clear after 1-2 drive cycles as vehicle computer systems reinitialize
