Carpet

Complete removal and replacement of the carpet from a 2008 Dodge Viper, including removal of seats, center console, sill plates, and interior trim panels to access carpet sections.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding to disarm airbag system.
3. Remove any floor mats and inspect carpet condition to identify all affected sections.
4. Photograph or mark the routing of any wiring harnesses visible along the floor before disassembly.
5. Ensure adequate lighting in the footwell and side sill areas.

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove driver and passenger seats
   Slide each seat fully rearward to access front mounting bolts. Remove the front seat mounting bolts using a Torx driver. Slide seat fully forward and remove the rear seat mounting bolts. If equipped, disconnect any seat wiring harness connector(s) located under the seat. Note that base Viper sport seats are manually adjusted and may have little or no wiring. Carefully lift and remove each seat from the vehicle. Note the number of seat mounting bolts as you remove them (typically 4 per seat) and verify against OEM documentation for this vehicle. Note: Seat bolt Torx size and torque specification must be confirmed from OEM service documentation before reinstallation.

   Remove center console
   Remove the shift knob by rotating counterclockwise (manual transmission). Pry up the console trim bezel around the shifter using trim panel tools. Locate and remove console mounting fasteners at the front, sides, and rear of the console assembly. Disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or switches. Lift the console assembly up and rearward to clear the shifter, then remove from vehicle. Console fasteners are typically Torx-type. Note: Center console fastener count and Torx/driver size must be confirmed from OEM service documentation.

   Remove door sill plates and kick panels
   Remove door sill plates on both driver and passenger sides by locating fasteners along the sill. These may be a combination of Torx screws and push-pin retainers. Gently pry up sill plates using trim tools. Remove kick panel trim on both sides by releasing retaining clips and removing any fasteners. The kick panels cover the front carpet edges and A-pillar base area.

   Remove seat belt lower anchor bolts
   Locate the seat belt lower anchor bolts for both driver and passenger seats. These anchor to the floor structure adjacent to the seat mounting locations. Remove the seat belt anchor bolts to allow carpet to be pulled free. Note the position of any spacers or washers on the anchor bolts for reinstallation.

   Disconnect and release carpet retainers at firewall and transmission tunnel
   Working in the driver footwell, locate carpet retaining clips or fasteners along the firewall edge and transmission tunnel. Remove or release these fasteners to free the carpet from the floor structure. The carpet may be secured with push-pin retainers or Torx screws at specific intervals. Check under the steering column area and along both sides of the transmission tunnel for additional attachment points.

   Remove carpet sections from driver side
   Starting at the driver side, carefully pull the carpet section away from the floor, working from front to rear. The driver side carpet section typically extends from the firewall to behind the seat area. Check for any remaining fasteners or clips holding the carpet in place as you work. The carpet may be tucked under trim edges or routed around floor-mounted components. Note the routing for reinstallation.

   Remove carpet sections from passenger side
   Repeat the carpet removal process on the passenger side. The passenger carpet section is typically separate from the driver side and may have different routing around the transmission tunnel. Check for carpet secured under the dashboard edge and along the door sill area. Remove the carpet section completely from the vehicle.

   Remove rear carpet sections and trim as needed
   If replacing carpet behind the seats, remove any additional trim panels or covers to access rear carpet sections. The Viper has limited rear cargo area carpet that may be a separate piece. Remove fasteners securing rear carpet sections and pull carpet free from the floor. Check for carpet extensions into side panel areas.

   Clean and inspect floor pan
   With all carpet removed, vacuum and clean the bare floor pan thoroughly. Inspect for rust, damage, or moisture intrusion points. Check all drain plugs in the floor pan to ensure they are sealed properly. This is an ideal time to treat any surface rust and apply sound deadening material if desired. Inspect all carpet mounting points and replace any damaged retaining clips or fasteners.

    Install new carpet sections
    Begin installation with the driver side carpet section. Position the carpet in the footwell, ensuring proper alignment with the firewall, transmission tunnel, and door sill edges. Work the carpet into place, tucking edges under trim mounting locations. Route the carpet around any floor-mounted brackets or studs. Secure the carpet at the firewall and tunnel mounting points using retaining clips or fasteners. Repeat the process for the passenger side carpet section, ensuring it mates properly with the driver side along the transmission tunnel if applicable. Install rear carpet sections if removed.

    Reinstall seat belt lower anchors
    Reinstall the seat belt lower anchor bolts through the carpet and into the floor structure. Ensure any spacers or washers are in the correct position. Tighten the seat belt anchor bolts to specification. These are critical safety fasteners and must be properly torqued. Note: Seat belt lower anchor bolt torque must be confirmed from OEM service documentation (seat belt anchors are typically in the 30-50 ft-lb range but the exact spec must be verified).

    Reinstall door sill plates and kick panels
    Reinstall kick panel trim on both sides, ensuring carpet edges are properly tucked behind the panels. Secure kick panels with retaining clips and fasteners. Reinstall door sill plates over the carpet edges, ensuring the carpet is not bunched or wrinkled. Secure sill plates with fasteners and push-pin retainers.

    Reinstall center console
    Position the center console over the shifter and align with mounting points. Reconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or switches. Install console mounting fasteners at front, sides, and rear locations. Install the console trim bezel around the shifter. Reinstall the shift knob by rotating clockwise until snug.

    Reinstall seats
    Position each seat into the vehicle and align with mounting holes. Reconnect seat wiring harness connector(s). Install rear seat mounting bolts first, then slide seat rearward and install front seat mounting bolts. Ensure all four mounting bolts per seat are properly started before final tightening. Tighten all seat mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern. Verify seat slides and reclines properly after installation.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Cycle the ignition to check for any airbag warning lights related to seat connectors. Test all electrical functions in the seats and console area. Verify seats are securely mounted by attempting to move them with force.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all carpet sections are properly seated and not bunched under trim panels or seats before final assembly.
2. Verify all electrical connections for seats and console components are fully engaged and secured.
3. Check that all trim panels are flush and properly clipped before returning vehicle to service.
4. Seat mounting bolts and seat belt anchors are safety-critical components; verify proper torque and installation.

Verification

• Visually inspect carpet for proper fit with no bunching, gaps, or interference with pedals or seat tracks.
• Test seat adjustment (fore/aft and recline) to ensure smooth operation without binding on carpet.
• Verify door sill plates and kick panels are secure and flush with no rattles.
• Check that all electrical functions (seat controls, console accessories) operate correctly.
• Confirm no airbag warning lights are present on the instrument cluster after reconnecting battery.
• Test drive vehicle to listen for any rattles or loose trim that may indicate improper reassembly.
