Center Console

Complete removal and reinstallation of the center console assembly in a 2008 Dodge Viper, including disconnecting electrical connections and removing mounting hardware.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
3. Ensure front seats are moved fully rearward for access
4. Open both doors fully and ensure adequate lighting inside cabin

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove shift knob
   Check the shift knob retention method before removing. On the 2008 Viper the knob may be secured by a threaded connection or by a set screw/lock ring; if threaded, unscrew counterclockwise by hand, otherwise loosen the retaining hardware first.    Remove shift boot and bezel
   Grasp the leather shift boot and pull upward to disengage it from the console opening. The boot is retained by friction clips. Once the boot is free, slide the boot retainer ring up the shift lever and remove it. Set both components aside.

   Remove rear console trim panel
   Starting at the rear of the console behind the seats, locate and remove the fasteners securing the rear trim panel. There are typically 2 screws accessible from the rear. Use a Torx driver to remove these fasteners. Gently pull the panel rearward to disengage any retaining clips and remove.

   Disconnect electrical connections at rear
   With the rear panel removed, locate electrical connectors for power outlets, window switches, or other accessories mounted in the console. Press the release tab on each connector and carefully pull apart. Label each connection or photograph their positions for reassembly.

   Remove front console trim bezel
   Locate the trim bezel surrounding the radio and HVAC controls at the front of the console. Remove 2-4 screws securing this bezel (typically T20 Torx). Carefully pull the bezel away from the dash, being mindful of any clips along the perimeter. Disconnect any electrical connectors behind the bezel for accessory switches before fully removing.

   Remove armrest and storage compartment lid
   Open the center console storage compartment. Inside, locate 2 screws at the hinge points of the armrest lid. Remove these screws and lift the armrest/lid assembly free. Check for any additional electrical connections for heated seat controls or power outlets integrated into the lid and disconnect if present.

   Remove console side trim panels
   The console has trim panels on each side covering the mounting points. Use a trim panel tool to carefully pry these panels away, starting at the rear and working forward. They are retained by plastic clips. Work slowly to avoid breaking the clips or cracking the panels.

   Remove console mounting fasteners
   With side panels removed, locate the console mounting fasteners. There are 4 primary mounting points: 2 at the front near the dash and 2 at the rear. Remove all 4 fasteners using the appropriate Torx driver. Additional fasteners may be present along the sides or bottom depending on configuration; inspect carefully and remove any found.

   Disconnect remaining electrical connections
   Before lifting the console, reach underneath and locate any remaining electrical connectors for cigarette lighters, power outlets, or other accessories. Press release tabs and disconnect all remaining connectors. Ensure no wiring will be pinched or stretched during console removal.

    Remove center console assembly
    Carefully lift the console assembly upward and rearward, maneuvering it around the shift lever. The Viper's tight cabin requires patience; tilt the console as needed to clear the dashboard and seats. Once clear of the shift lever, lift the console out through the nearest door opening, tilting as needed to clear the seats and dashboard.

Reassembly

1. Installation is the reverse of removal, following steps 10 through 1 in reverse order
2. When installing console, carefully guide it over the shift lever and ensure no wiring is pinched beneath the console base
3. Reconnect all electrical connectors, referencing photos or labels made during disassembly
4. Verify all mounting fasteners are tightened securely but do not overtighten plastic mounting points
5. Ensure all trim panels and bezels are fully seated and clips are engaged before installing screws
6. Test all electrical accessories (power outlets, switches) before final reassembly
7. Reconnect negative battery cable after all components are installed

Verification

• Operate all switches and accessories in the console to confirm proper electrical connections
• Check that the shift lever moves freely through all gears without interference from boot or console
• Verify all trim panels are flush and secure with no gaps or rattles
• Confirm armrest opens and closes smoothly and latches properly
• Test that storage compartment lid operates correctly if equipped with dampeners
