Combination Switch

Remove and replace the combination switch (turn signal/wiper/multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2008 Dodge Viper.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes minimum
4. Adjust steering wheel to lowest tilt position for best access to upper column covers

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower steering column cover
   Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the screws securing the lower cover, verifying the fastener type (Torx or Phillips) and count against the actual hardware present on the vehicle. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column to release any remaining clips. Set aside.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   With the lower cover removed, locate the Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws accessible from the underside). Remove these screws. Carefully lift the upper cover upward and off the steering column, working it around the steering wheel if necessary. Set aside with hardware.

   Disconnect combination switch electrical connectors
   Identify the electrical connectors attached to the combination switch assembly on the steering column. Verify the number and location of connectors against the factory wiring diagram for the 2008 Viper before disconnecting. Press the locking tabs on each connector and pull straight away from the switch to disconnect. Press the locking tabs on each connector and pull straight away from the switch to disconnect. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.

   Remove combination switch mounting fasteners
   Locate the fasteners securing the combination switch to the steering column, verifying the type and count against the actual hardware present. Remove these fasteners completely and retain them for reinstallation.

   Remove combination switch assembly
   With all fasteners removed and connectors disconnected, carefully slide the combination switch assembly off the steering column. The switch wraps around the column and may require gentle wiggling to clear the clockspring and column housing. Be careful not to disturb the clockspring mechanism behind the switch.

   Install new combination switch assembly
   Position the new combination switch assembly around the steering column, ensuring it aligns with the mounting holes on the column housing. Verify the switch lever positions match the original orientation. Slide the switch fully onto the column until it seats against the mounting surface.

   Install combination switch mounting fasteners
   Insert and hand-tighten the Torx screws securing the combination switch to the steering column. Tighten the screws securely, but avoid over-tightening the plastic housing. Verify the switch has no lateral play and sits flush against the column.

   Reconnect combination switch electrical connectors
   Reconnect the electrical connectors to the combination switch, ensuring each connector locks fully into place with an audible click. Route the wiring harness in its original path to prevent pinching during cover reinstallation. Gently tug each connector to verify proper seating.

   Reinstall upper steering column cover
   Position the upper steering column cover over the column, working it around the steering wheel and ensuring all clips align with their receptacles. Install the Torx screws from the underside and tighten securely. Verify the cover sits flush with no gaps.
10. 10

    Reinstall lower steering column cover
    Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column housing. Press firmly to engage any retaining clips. Install the Torx screws at the bottom of the cover and tighten securely. Verify both covers fit flush with consistent gaps around the perimeter.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal
2. Perform an ignition cycle to allow the vehicle systems to initialize
3. Verify steering wheel remains centered and clockspring is not disturbed

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify all combination switch functions operate correctly: turn signals left and right with proper indicator operation, hazard lights, high beam/low beam, wiper speeds and washer spray, cruise control buttons if equipped
• Verify no airbag warning light illumination on the instrument cluster
• Test all switch functions with engine running to confirm full operation under load
• Inspect steering column covers for proper fit with no rattles or gaps
