Complete removal and reinstallation of cylinder heads on the 2008 Dodge Viper 8.4L V10 engine, including disassembly of intake/exhaust manifolds, valve train components, and all associated systems.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system discharge
3. Remove engine cover panels
4. Drain cooling system completely by opening radiator petcock and removing lower radiator hose
5. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter
6. Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump relay and cranking engine until it fails to start
7. Label and photograph all electrical connectors, vacuum lines, and hose routing for reference
8. Install engine support fixture or attach engine hoist to lifting eyes

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove intake system components
   Remove air intake tube and air filter housing assembly. Disconnect throttle body electrical connector and remove throttle body. Disconnect all vacuum lines from intake plenum, labeling each connection. Remove PCV hoses and breather tubes from valve covers. Disconnect all intake-mounted sensor connectors (such as MAP/MAF and IAT as equipped), verifying the specific sensor configuration against the factory service manual for the 2008 Dodge Viper 8.4L V10.

   Disconnect fuel supply and return lines at fuel rail using appropriate disconnect tools.    Remove pushrods
   Remove all 20 pushrods from engine, keeping them in order. Use a numbered pushrod holder or mark each pushrod's location and orientation. Inspect pushrods for wear, scoring, or bending. Cover cylinder head bolt holes and valve openings with clean shop towels to prevent debris entry.

   Remove cylinder head bolts
   Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse of tightening sequence, working from outer bolts toward center in multiple passes. Verify the exact cylinder head bolt count and removal sequence against the 2008 Dodge Viper 8.4L V10 factory service manual before proceeding. Once loosened, remove bolts completely and store separately for inspection. Check bolts for stretching or necking - if TTY bolts, replacement is mandatory.     Remove cylinder heads

Lift cylinder heads straight up to avoid damage to dowel pins. Place cylinder heads on padded surface with combustion chambers facing up. Remove and discard cylinder head gaskets. Cover exposed cylinders immediately with clean shop towels.

    Clean and inspect mating surfaces
    Using plastic gasket scraper, carefully remove all gasket material from cylinder head and block mating surfaces. Do not use metal scrapers on aluminum surfaces. Clean surfaces with degreaser and lint-free cloths. Inspect cylinder head mating surfaces for warping using precision straightedge and feeler gauges - compare measured warpage against the maximum allowable specification in the factory service manual for the 2008 Dodge Viper 8.4L V10. Inspect block deck for damage or corrosion. Check cylinder head dowel pins are intact and not damaged.

    Install new cylinder head gaskets
    Verify block mating surfaces are completely clean and dry. Install new cylinder head gaskets onto block, ensuring correct left/right orientation and proper alignment with dowel pins and coolant passages. Do not use any sealant unless specifically required by gasket manufacturer. Gaskets are marked for front/rear and left/right bank orientation.

    Install cylinder heads
    With assistance, carefully lower cylinder heads onto block, aligning with dowel pins. Ensure gaskets remain properly positioned during installation. Install cylinder head alignment dowels if available to prevent gasket shifting. Hand-start all cylinder head bolts before tightening any. Follow the exact cylinder head bolt torque sequence, staging, and torque/angle values specified in the factory service manual for the 2008 Dodge Viper 8.4L V10. Do not use generic torque values or sequences. If TTY bolts are used, they must be new.

15. 15

    Complete reassembly
    Install new exhaust manifold gaskets and mount exhaust manifolds, torquing bolts to specification in sequence from center outward. Install new valve cover gaskets and valve covers, torquing bolts evenly to specification. Install spark plugs to specification. Install ignition coils with new O-rings if equipped. Install intake manifold with new gaskets, torquing bolts in proper sequence from center outward. Reconnect fuel rail and injectors. Reconnect all vacuum lines, electrical connectors, coolant hoses, and breather tubes per documentation from disassembly. Install throttle body with new gasket. Install air intake system.

Reassembly

1. Fill cooling system with Mopar HOAT 50/50 coolant to proper level (19 quarts total capacity)
2. Fill engine with 0W-40 full synthetic oil (11 quarts) and install new oil filter
3. Reconnect negative battery cable
4. Prime fuel system by cycling ignition on/off three times without starting
5. Remove engine support fixture or hoist
6. Double-check all electrical connectors, hoses, and hardware are properly secured
7. Install engine cover panels

Verification

• Before starting engine, manually rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions to verify valve train operation and check for binding
• Start engine and verify it runs smoothly without unusual noises, paying attention to valve train operation
• Check for coolant, oil, fuel, and exhaust leaks at all service points
• Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify cooling system operation
• Check coolant and oil levels after initial warm-up, top off as necessary
• Monitor engine temperature gauge during test drive to ensure proper cooling system function
• Verify no check engine light or codes are present after test drive
• Re-check cylinder head bolt torque after initial heat cycle if using non-TTY bolts (verify procedure with manufacturer specifications)
