Dashboard

Complete removal and replacement of the instrument panel (dashboard) assembly, including disconnection of all electrical connectors, HVAC components, and structural fasteners.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system discharge
3. Remove both front seats to provide adequate working space and prevent damage during dashboard removal
4. Remove the center console assembly completely
5. Remove the steering wheel and steering column covers
6. Document the position of all adjustable components (pedal positions, brake bias adjuster, etc.) for reference during reassembly

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove instrument cluster
   Remove the instrument cluster bezel by carefully prying around the perimeter with trim tools to release the retaining clips. Remove the fasteners securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard (count and location per the factory service manual for this vehicle). Pull the cluster forward and disconnect the electrical connectors from the rear. Label connectors before disconnecting. Remove the cluster completely from the vehicle.

   Remove side trim panels and A-pillar covers
   Remove the driver and passenger side lower dash trim panels by releasing the retaining clips. Remove both A-pillar trim covers by gently releasing the clips per the factory service manual, checking first for any airbag or wiring routing behind the covers. Verify against the FSM whether these covers must be removed to access upper dashboard mounting points on this vehicle. Set aside all clips in a magnetic tray.

   Disconnect driver side electrical components
   Working from the driver side, disconnect all electrical connectors for the following components: headlight switch, dimmer control, traction control switches, hazard switch, and any additional switches mounted in the dashboard. If accessible from the dashboard structure, disconnect the OBD-II (data link) connector and free the port from its mounting bracket per the factory service manual. Verify the exact location before disconnecting. Label each connector with tape and marker.

   Disconnect passenger side electrical components
   Working from the passenger side, disconnect all electrical connectors including: passenger airbag connector (ensure battery has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes), glove box light, HVAC control head connectors, radio head unit connectors, and any accessory power outlets. Remove the glove box assembly if still installed by releasing hinge pins or removing mounting fasteners.

   Disconnect HVAC components
   Disconnect the electrical connectors from the HVAC blower motor and HVAC blend/mode actuators. Note the routing and position of each harness. Confirm against the factory service manual whether any control cables or vacuum lines are present on this vehicle before proceeding. The HVAC unit itself remains in the vehicle but must be free from dashboard connections.

   Disconnect steering column from dashboard
   Remove the fasteners securing the steering column to the dashboard support structure. Remove the steering column bracket-to-dashboard-beam fasteners (count and type per the factory service manual for this vehicle). Support the steering column weight before removing the final fastener. Lower the column carefully and rest it on the driver seat (protected with a towel). Disconnect the column wiring harness from any dashboard-mounted connectors.

   Remove dashboard end caps and side fasteners
   Remove the dashboard end caps at both the driver and passenger sides by prying carefully with trim tools or removing any visible fasteners. These caps conceal fasteners that secure the dashboard sides to the A-pillar and door jamb area. Remove all exposed fasteners behind the end caps. Remove all fasteners revealed behind the end caps (count and locations per the factory service manual for this vehicle).

   Remove upper dashboard fasteners
   Locate and remove all upper dashboard mounting fasteners along the windshield base. These fasteners are typically accessible from above once the A-pillar covers are removed. Locate and remove all upper dashboard mounting fasteners across the upper span (count and locations per the factory service manual). Check behind the defrost vents for additional hidden fasteners.

   Remove center dashboard mounting fasteners
   With the center console removed, access and remove the center dashboard mounting fasteners from below. These fasteners secure the dashboard to the center tunnel and center support structure. Remove the fasteners securing the dashboard to the floor pan area. Remove all center dashboard mounting fasteners (count and locations per the factory service manual for this vehicle).

    Disconnect final wiring harnesses and ground points
    Trace all remaining wiring harnesses from the dashboard back to their main connectors or pass-through points at the firewall. Disconnect large multi-pin connectors typically located at the driver side kick panel area or behind the center stack. Remove any ground wire fasteners securing grounds to the dashboard structure. Ensure all harness routing clips are released so wiring can remain with the vehicle body.

    Remove dashboard assembly from vehicle
    With all fasteners, connectors, and cables disconnected, carefully lift and pull the dashboard assembly rearward with assistance from a second person. The dashboard will need to be tilted and maneuvered to clear the windshield, steering column opening, and door openings. Lift the assembly up and out of the vehicle through the passenger door opening, protecting all edges to prevent damage to seats, door sills, and the dashboard itself.

    Inspect mounting points and prepare for installation
    With the dashboard removed, inspect all mounting points, studs, and clips on the vehicle body for damage. Replace any damaged studs or clips. Clean the mounting surfaces and HVAC duct interfaces. Inspect the HVAC housing and heater core connections for leaks or damage while accessible. This is an ideal time to service or replace the heater core, evaporator core, or blower motor if needed.

Reassembly

1. Installation is the reverse of removal with the following notes
2. Have an assistant help guide the dashboard assembly into position, entering through the passenger door opening at an angle
3. Loosely install all dashboard mounting fasteners first, then tighten in sequence: center floor fasteners, side fasteners, upper windshield fasteners, ensuring even seating of the dashboard
4. Reconnect all electrical connectors using your labels and photos as reference, ensuring positive engagement with audible clicks
5. Reconnect HVAC control cables and verify full range of motion for temperature, mode, and recirculation controls before final dashboard fastening
6. Reinstall the steering column and verify proper alignment with the dashboard opening before tightening column mounting fasteners
7. Test all electrical components before reinstalling trim panels (lights, switches, HVAC controls, radio, instrument cluster)
8. Reinstall instrument cluster and verify gauge operation and warning light function
9. Reinstall all trim panels, end caps, A-pillar covers, and bezels, ensuring all clips are fully seated
10. Reinstall center console and front seats
11. Reconnect the negative battery cable and initialize any systems requiring relearning procedures

Verification

• Verify all dashboard mounting points are secure with no gaps between the dashboard and A-pillars or windshield base
• Test all instrument cluster gauges and warning lights for proper operation
• Test all dashboard switches and controls (lights, HVAC, hazard, traction control) for proper function
• Verify HVAC system operates correctly in all modes (heat, vent, AC, defrost) with proper airflow from all vents
• Check that all dashboard trim panels and bezels are securely fastened with no rattles or squeaks
• Verify the steering column is properly secured and aligned with no excessive play
• Test all accessory power outlets and confirm the OBD-II port is functional
• Verify the passenger airbag indicator light illuminates briefly at key-on and then extinguishes, confirming proper airbag connection
• Road test the vehicle to check for any unusual noises, vibrations, or loose components from the dashboard area
