Remove and replace the fuel filler cap on a 2008 Dodge Viper, including inspection of the tether and seal.

Preparation

1. Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground and the engine is off and cool
2. Open the fuel filler door by pressing the release button located on the driver's side door sill or using the interior release lever, depending on trim

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove existing fuel cap
   Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases from the filler neck. The cap will click several times as you turn it; continue turning past the final click until it is free. If equipped with a tether, the cap will remain attached to the filler neck housing via a flexible tether.

   Inspect tether attachment
   Examine the tether connection point on both the fuel cap and the filler neck housing, if a tether is present. The tether typically connects via a molded anchor point on the cap and a slot or hook near the filler neck. Note the orientation and attachment method for reinstallation.

   Detach tether if replacing cap
   If replacing the fuel cap, disconnect the tether from either the old cap or the filler neck housing by flexing the tether anchor slightly and sliding it out of its mounting slot. Some designs use a clip-in connector that can be pried free with light finger pressure.

   Inspect filler neck seal surface
   With the cap removed, visually inspect the fuel filler neck sealing surface for debris, corrosion, or damage. Wipe clean with a lint-free cloth if necessary. Check for any signs of fuel leakage around the neck.

   Inspect new fuel cap seal
   Examine the rubber seal on the new fuel cap. Ensure the seal is properly seated in its groove on the cap underside, with no cracks, deformation, or foreign material. The seal should be soft and pliable.

   Attach tether to new cap
   If installing a new cap with tether, connect the tether to the filler neck housing mounting point using the same method noted during removal. Ensure the tether anchor is fully seated and secure. Verify the tether length allows the cap to reach the filler neck without excessive tension.

   Install fuel cap
   Align the fuel cap with the filler neck threads and turn clockwise. Continue turning until you hear at least three distinct clicks, indicating proper engagement and seal compression. Do not overtighten past the clicking mechanism.

Reassembly

1. Close the fuel filler door fully and verify it latches securely
2. If the vehicle is equipped with a fuel cap message or check engine light related to cap seal, it should clear after several drive cycles with the new cap properly installed

Verification

• Attempt to remove the fuel cap by turning counterclockwise; it should release smoothly after clicking
• Reinstall the cap and verify you hear at least three clicks during installation, confirming proper seal engagement
• Check that the tether does not interfere with cap installation or removal
• Verify the fuel door closes and latches properly without interference from the cap or tether
