Headlight Assembly

Remove and replace the headlight assembly on a 2008 Dodge Viper, including disconnecting electrical connectors and removing mounting fasteners.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition.
2. Open hood and secure in open position.
3. Allow engine to cool if recently operated to avoid burns from hot components.

Procedure

   Access headlight mounting area
   Locate the headlight assembly from the front of the vehicle. The 2008 Viper headlight is mounted to the front fascia/front clip assembly. Access to the mounting fasteners and connectors may require removing fasteners from the front and reaching behind the headlight housing. Consult the factory service manual for the exact access points on this platform.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the wiring harness connectors at the rear of the headlight assembly. There may be multiple connectors, typically one for the headlight bulb(s) and one for the turn signal/marker light; if the assembly uses HID lighting there may be an additional ballast connector. Verify the exact count and type against the factory service manual. Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Support the connectors to prevent them from falling into the engine bay.

   Remove upper mounting fasteners
   Locate and remove the upper mounting fasteners securing the headlight assembly. Verify the exact quantity and fastener size against the factory service manual, as this platform's composite front-end mounting may differ from typical steel radiator-support mounting.

   Remove lower mounting fastener
   Locate and remove the lower mounting fastener(s) at the bottom of the headlight assembly. Verify the exact quantity and fastener size against the factory service manual. This may require reaching down from above or using an extension for better access depending on which side you are working on.

   Release headlight assembly
   With all mounting fasteners removed, gently pull the headlight assembly forward and outward from the vehicle. The assembly may have alignment pins or tabs that seat into the body; carefully wiggle the assembly if needed to disengage these locating features. Support the assembly weight throughout removal.

   Remove headlight assembly from vehicle
   Once free from all mounting points, carefully lift the headlight assembly out of the vehicle and place it on a clean, padded surface to avoid scratching the lens. Inspect the mounting points and alignment pins on both the assembly and vehicle for damage or wear.

   Transfer components if reusing
   If installing a new headlight assembly, transfer any bulbs, ballasts, or mounting hardware from the old assembly to the new one as needed. Verify that all components are properly seated and secured in the new assembly before installation.

   Install new headlight assembly
   Position the new or replacement headlight assembly into the vehicle, aligning the locating pins and tabs with their corresponding receptacles in the body. Guide the assembly carefully to avoid damaging the lens or mounting points. Push the assembly rearward until it seats fully against the radiator support.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Install the lower mounting bolt first, threading it by hand to ensure proper alignment. Then install the 2 upper mounting bolts, also starting them by hand. Once all 3 bolts are threaded, tighten them snugly with a 10mm socket in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as this can crack the mounting tabs on the headlight assembly.

    Reconnect electrical connectors
    Reconnect the wiring harness connectors to the rear of the headlight assembly. Push each connector firmly until you hear or feel a click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is secure.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked.
2. Verify headlight assembly is flush with surrounding body panels and properly aligned.
3. Check that all mounting bolts are snug but not overtightened.

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and activate headlights to verify both low and high beams function.
• Test turn signals and marker lights to confirm all bulbs are working.
• Visually inspect headlight alignment and adjust if necessary using adjustment screws (typically located at top and side of assembly).
• Close hood and verify no tools or parts were left in engine bay.
