HVAC Control Panel

Remove and replace the HVAC control panel assembly from the center console of a 2008 Dodge Viper, including disconnecting electrical connectors and control cables.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 2 minutes
4. Allow HVAC system and engine to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated
5. Gather all tools and prepare workspace with adequate lighting

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center console trim bezel
   Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the center console trim bezel outward starting from the lower edge near the shifter. Work around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. The bezel surrounds the radio and HVAC controls. Disconnect the hazard switch connector from the back of the bezel once it is loose enough to access, then remove the bezel completely.

   Remove radio unit
   Locate and remove the 4 Torx fasteners securing the radio assembly to the dash structure. Pull the radio forward enough to access the antenna cable and electrical connectors on the rear. Disconnect the antenna lead and main harness connector, then remove the radio completely to provide access to the HVAC control panel fasteners.

   Remove HVAC control panel mounting fasteners
   Locate the mounting fasteners securing the HVAC control panel to the center console structure. Remove the fasteners (typically Torx-head fasteners at the corners and sides of the panel). Keep fasteners organized in a magnetic tray as they may be of different lengths.

   Pull HVAC control panel forward
   Carefully pull the HVAC control panel forward from the dash opening approximately 3-4 inches. Support the panel while accessing the rear connections. Use a flashlight to identify all electrical connectors and control cables attached to the rear of the unit.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the main electrical connector on the back of the HVAC control panel. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the control panel. If equipped with additional connectors for illumination or other functions, disconnect these as well by releasing their locking mechanisms.

   Disconnect temperature control cable
   Locate the temperature blend door control cable attached to the HVAC control panel. At the panel end, squeeze or release the cable housing retaining clip and slide the cable housing out of its mount. Then disconnect the cable end from the temperature control arm by pulling it straight off or releasing its clip, depending on the attachment style.

   Disconnect mode control cable
   Locate the mode door control cable (controls air distribution). Release the cable housing from its retaining clip on the back of the HVAC control panel. Disconnect the cable end from the mode control arm, taking care not to bend or kink the cable.

   Remove HVAC control panel
   With all electrical connectors and control cables disconnected, remove the HVAC control panel completely from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting location for any debris or damage before installing the replacement unit.

   Prepare replacement control panel
   Unpack the new HVAC control panel and verify it matches the original unit in configuration and connector types. Check that all control knobs and switches operate smoothly before installation. Transfer any required components from the old unit if the replacement is a bare panel.

    Install control cables to new panel
    Begin installation by connecting the temperature and mode control cables to the new HVAC control panel. Attach the cable ends to their respective control arms first, ensuring they snap or clip into place securely. Then insert the cable housings into their retaining clips on the back of the panel. Verify the cables move freely without binding when the control knobs are rotated.

    Connect electrical connectors
    Connect the main electrical harness connector to the back of the new HVAC control panel, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Connect any additional connectors for illumination or auxiliary functions. Verify all connections are fully seated.

    Install HVAC control panel
    Carefully guide the HVAC control panel into the dash opening while routing the cables and wiring behind the unit. Push the panel into position until it is flush with the surrounding trim. Install and tighten the mounting fasteners in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the panel.

    Reinstall radio unit
    Connect the antenna cable and main harness connector to the radio unit. Slide the radio into its mounting location and install the 4 Torx fasteners. Verify the radio is secure and properly aligned with the dash opening.

    Reinstall center console trim bezel
    Connect the hazard switch connector to the back of the center console trim bezel. Align the bezel with the dash opening and press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Verify the bezel is flush and secure with no gaps.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the negative battery cable
2. Verify all trim panels are properly seated with no gaps or loose clips
3. Ensure all control knobs rotate smoothly without resistance or binding

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off) and verify the HVAC control panel illuminates properly
• Test all HVAC control knobs and switches: temperature control, mode selection, fan speed, and A/C button
• Start the engine and verify air flows from the correct vents when changing mode selection
• Verify temperature control adjusts from full cold to full hot smoothly
• Test fan speed at all settings from low to high
• Activate A/C and verify compressor engages (listen for compressor clutch click)
• Check that all radio functions operate normally
• Verify hazard switch and power window switches function properly
