Remove and replace the ignition switch assembly on a 2008 Dodge Viper, requiring steering column shroud removal and electrical connector service.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes minimum for airbag system discharge
4. Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access
5. Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower steering column shroud
   Locate the fasteners securing the lower steering column shroud. Refer to the factory service manual for the exact fastener count and type on the underside of the lower shroud (Chrysler columns of this era commonly use Torx fasteners). Remove these screws and carefully pull the lower shroud downward and away from the column. The shroud may have retaining clips at the rear - gently work these free without forcing.

   Remove upper steering column shroud
   With the lower shroud removed, locate the fasteners for the upper shroud. Remove the Phillips screws securing the upper shroud (typically 2 screws accessible from the bottom). Lift the upper shroud up and away from the column, being mindful of any wiring harnesses routed near the shroud edges.

   Locate ignition switch assembly
   With both shrouds removed, identify the ignition switch assembly mounted to the steering column. The ignition switch is the electrical component mounted on the steering column, distinct from the lock cylinder. Refer to the factory service manual to confirm the exact mounting location and orientation for this vehicle. The switch has a multi-pin electrical connector attached to its rear.

   Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector
   Press the locking tab on the ignition switch electrical connector and carefully pull it straight away from the switch. The connector may be stiff - use steady pressure rather than jerking motions. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Remove ignition switch mounting fasteners
   Remove the 2 fasteners securing the ignition switch to the steering column housing. These are typically Torx screws. Support the switch as you remove the final fastener to prevent it from dropping.

   Remove ignition switch from column
   Carefully slide the ignition switch away from the lock cylinder actuator rod. The switch has a mechanical connection to the lock cylinder that must be disengaged. Note the orientation of the switch and the position of the actuator rod engagement for installation of the new switch.

   Prepare new ignition switch
   Remove the new ignition switch from its packaging. Compare it to the old switch to verify correct replacement. Ensure the actuator rod receiver on the new switch is in the correct position to engage with the lock cylinder actuator.

   Install new ignition switch
   Position the new ignition switch to align with the lock cylinder actuator rod. Carefully slide the switch onto the steering column housing, ensuring the actuator rod properly engages with the switch mechanism. The switch should seat flush against the column housing without forcing.

   Install ignition switch mounting fasteners
   Insert and tighten the 2 mounting fasteners securing the ignition switch to the column housing. Tighten securely but do not overtighten - refer to the factory service manual for the correct torque specification and housing material for this vehicle. Verify the switch does not move when gently pulled.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push the electrical connector onto the new ignition switch until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Ensure no wires are pinched or under tension.

    Reinstall steering column shrouds
    Position the upper steering column shroud over the column, aligning any mounting bosses or clip locations. Install the upper shroud fasteners and tighten securely. Position the lower shroud beneath the column, engaging any rear retaining clips first, then install the lower shroud fasteners.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Without starting the engine, turn the key to the RUN position and verify that all dash warning lights illuminate as expected. Turn the key to the RUN position and confirm proper power-up and that no immobilizer/security warning lamp remains illuminated. Verify the switch actuates through LOCK, OFF, ACC, RUN, and START positions. Note that this vehicle uses a Sentry Key immobilizer, so the key/switch may require reprogramming with a Chrysler-compatible scan tool before the engine will start.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column shroud fasteners are tight and no gaps exist between shroud sections
2. Verify no wiring harnesses are pinched between shroud sections or under fasteners
3. Check that all dashboard functions (lights, gauges, accessories) operate correctly with key in RUN position

Verification

• Turn ignition key through all positions multiple times, verifying smooth operation without binding
• Verify key can be removed only in LOCK position
• Start engine and verify normal operation
• Confirm all electrical accessories function properly in RUN and ACC positions
• Verify steering column tilt and telescope functions still operate normally if equipped
• Check for proper operation of steering column stalks (turn signals, wipers) to ensure nothing was disturbed
