Complete removal and replacement of all hydraulic roller lifters on the 8.4L V10 engine, including valve train disassembly, lifter extraction, and proper break-in procedures.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL: Improper valve train assembly can cause catastrophic engine failure, valve-to-piston contact, and projectile components. If ANY step is unclear, stop and consult professional service.
⚠️Never rotate engine with lifters removed or improperly seated. Valve-to-piston contact WILL occur and cause severe engine damage.
⚠️Engine oil must be fully drained before lifter removal. Hot oil can cause severe burns.
⚠The 8.4L V10 uses a specific lifter break-in procedure. Failure to follow break-in protocol will cause premature lifter and camshaft failure.
⚠Lifters and their bores are matched sets. Never mix lifter positions or install used lifters in different bores without complete cleaning and inspection.
⚠Maintain absolute cleanliness throughout this procedure. Any contamination in lifter bores or on cam lobes will cause rapid wear.
ℹ️This procedure requires the engine to remain stationary for extended periods. Ensure vehicle is on level ground with proper support.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface, engage parking brake, and place wheel chocks. Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 3 hours after operation) to prevent burns and thermal damage during disassembly.
- Remove engine cover by releasing snap fasteners around perimeter.
- Drain engine oil completely into suitable container. Remove oil filter and allow additional drainage time.
- Relieve fuel system pressure: remove fuel pump relay (in PDC), start engine until it stalls, attempt restart to verify zero pressure.
- Disconnect fuel rail quick-connects using appropriate disconnect tools. Cap all fuel lines immediately.
- Photograph all electrical connections, vacuum lines, and component positions for reassembly reference.
- Label all pushrods, rocker arms, and lifters with cylinder number and intake/exhaust position using permanent marker on masking tape. Organization is CRITICAL.
- Prepare clean workspace with labeled parts trays for each cylinder bank (1-5 and 6-10).
Procedure
- 1Remove intake manifold assemblyDisconnect all electrical connectors from throttle body, fuel injectors, and intake manifold sensors. Remove throttle body linkage and cruise control cable if equipped. Disconnect PCV hoses and brake booster vacuum line. Remove intake manifold mounting bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (outside to inside pattern). The 8.4L intake uses approximately 16 mounting bolts. Carefully lift intake manifold assembly straight up to avoid damaging gasket surfaces. Inspect manifold base and cylinder head surfaces for damage.
- 2Remove valve coversDisconnect ignition coil connectors on both valve covers. Remove ignition coils from each spark plug (10 total, 5 per bank — one coil per cylinder). Remove valve cover bolts and carefully pry valve covers free using plastic pry tool at designated pry points. The valve covers use integrated gaskets. Inspect valve cover mating surfaces on cylinder heads for damage or warping. Verify all pushrods are straight and undamaged through visual inspection.
- 3Remove rocker arm assembliesBeginning with cylinder 1, loosen rocker arm shaft mounting bolts evenly in multiple passes to prevent shaft bending. The V10 uses rocker shaft assemblies with multiple mounting pedestals per bank. Remove bolts completely and lift rocker shaft assembly as a unit. Keep rocker assemblies separated by bank. Place rocker assemblies in labeled trays with orientation clearly marked. Inspect rocker arms for wear, scoring, or damaged roller tips. Check rocker shafts for straightness and oil hole blockage.
- 4Remove pushrodsRemove all pushrods from both banks, keeping them in strict order by cylinder and position (intake/exhaust). Use a labeled pushrod holder or number each pushrod 1I, 1E, 2I, 2E, etc. Roll each pushrod on flat surface to check for bending. Measure pushrod length if any appear damaged. Inspect pushrod ends for wear, mushrooming, or damage. Any damaged pushrods must be replaced individually with correct-length OEM-spec pushrods to maintain proper valve train geometry.
- 5Access lifter valleyRemove valley pan cover bolts securing the lifter valley shield. The valley pan protects the lifter galley and cam from debris. Carefully remove valley pan and gasket, taking care not to drop any fasteners into the engine. Inspect camshaft lobes for scoring, pitting, or abnormal wear patterns. Any cam damage requires camshaft replacement and complete bottom-end inspection. Verify cam timing marks are still visible and in correct alignment (do not rotate engine at this point).
- 6Remove lifter guide retainersThe 8.4L V10 uses lifter guide retainers (dog bone style) that hold lifters in their bores. Remove the retainer bolts from each lifter guide assembly. There are typically 2 guide assemblies per cylinder bank, each securing multiple lifter pairs. Carefully remove guide retainers and keep with their respective bank. Inspect guides for cracks, wear, or damage to retention tabs.
- 7Extract liftersUsing magnetic lifter removal tool, carefully extract each lifter straight up from its bore. Pull slowly to avoid scoring the lifter bore. As each lifter is removed, place it in the corresponding position in your labeled parts tray. If lifters are stuck, use rotational motion while pulling—NEVER pry or use excessive force. Inspect each lifter for cam lobe wear pattern on roller surface, scoring on body, and internal mechanical integrity. Pump each lifter by hand to verify it is not collapsed or seized. Check lifter bores for scoring, varnish buildup, or damage.
- 8Clean and inspect lifter boresThoroughly clean each lifter bore using lint-free shop towels and appropriate solvent. Remove all varnish and oil residue. Inspect bores for scoring, out-of-round condition, or damage. Use telescoping bore gauge or inside micrometer to check bore diameter if damage is suspected. Clean camshaft lobes with solvent and inspect under good lighting for scoring, heat discoloration, or abnormal wear. Verify camshaft end play is within specification using dial indicator if available. Rotate camshaft slowly by hand to verify smooth rotation without binding.
- 9Prepare new lifters for installationUnpack new lifters and verify correct quantity (20 total). Inspect each new lifter for shipping damage or contamination. DO NOT pump new lifters by hand excessively—they are pre-charged with oil. Coat each lifter body completely with engine assembly lube, paying special attention to the roller surface and body sides. Apply engine oil or assembly lube to cam lobes and lifter rollers. Because this engine uses roller lifters, the aggressive flat-tappet break-in is not required, but coat all contact surfaces to ensure lubrication on initial start.
- 10Install liftersInstall each lifter straight down into its bore, ensuring roller faces the camshaft lobe correctly. Lifters should slide into bores with light hand pressure—any binding indicates bore damage or contamination. Verify each lifter rotates freely in its bore but without excessive side clearance. Ensure lifter roller sits squarely on cam lobe before proceeding. Install lifters progressively, one bank at a time, to maintain organization.
- 11Install lifter guide retainersPosition lifter guide retainers over lifter pairs, ensuring guides engage properly with lifter flats or grooves. Install and hand-tighten retainer bolts. Verify all lifters remain properly seated on cam lobes. Tighten retainer bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern. Apply light thread locker to retainer bolts if specified by manufacturer. Verify lifters still move freely after retainer installation by pressing down carefully on each one.
- 12Install valley pan and pushrodsInstall new valley pan gasket, applying small dabs of RTV at corners if specified. Position valley pan carefully and install mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque to specification in sequence from center outward. Install pushrods in their EXACT original positions (or new pushrods in sequence if replacing). Ensure each pushrod seats fully in lifter cup—you should feel positive engagement. Verify pushrods are straight and rotate freely in their cups.
- 13Install rocker arm assembliesPosition rocker shaft assemblies on their respective cylinder heads, ensuring rocker arms align with pushrod tips. Apply engine oil to all rocker arm roller tips and pivot points. Install rocker shaft mounting bolts finger-tight. Slowly tighten rocker shaft bolts in multiple passes (at least 3 passes) from center pedestals outward to avoid shaft bending and ensure even loading. Torque to specification in final pass. Verify all rocker arms move freely and pushrods are properly centered in rocker arm sockets. Rotate engine by hand 2 complete revolutions in the normal direction of rotation (clockwise viewed from front, using the crankshaft bolt) to verify smooth rotation and confirm no binding.
- 14Install valve covers and intake manifoldClean all gasket surfaces thoroughly with gasket scraper and solvent. Install new valve cover gaskets (these typically have integrated seals in the covers). Apply light coat of RTV to corners if specified. Position valve covers and install mounting bolts, torquing in crisscross pattern to specification. Install ignition coils with light coating of dielectric grease in spark plug boots. Clean intake manifold mating surfaces. Install new intake manifold gaskets with alignment pins engaged. Position intake manifold carefully to avoid gasket movement. Install intake manifold bolts finger-tight, then torque in sequence from center outward to specification in multiple passes. Reconnect all electrical connections, vacuum lines, and fuel lines.
- 15Initial start and break-in procedureInstall new oil filter and fill engine with fresh 0W-40 synthetic oil to proper level. Reconnect battery. Prime oil system by cranking engine with fuel pump relay removed and ignition disabled (approximately 10-15 seconds of cranking). Verify oil pressure builds on gauge. Reinstall fuel pump relay. Start engine and immediately verify oil pressure (should rise within 5 seconds). Because this engine uses roller lifters, an aggressive high-RPM break-in is not required. Start engine, verify oil pressure, and check for leaks and abnormal noise. Allow to reach operating temperature, then inspect. Follow Mopar service procedure for any specified initial operation. Monitor for abnormal noises, oil leaks, or warning lights. After break-in period, allow engine to cool, then change oil and filter again. New lifters shed break-in material that must be removed.
Reassembly
- Follow installation steps 9-15 in exact order. Do not skip or reorder steps.
- Torque all fasteners to specification using multiple progressive passes rather than single-pass torquing.
- The lifter break-in procedure (step 15) is mandatory and cannot be abbreviated. Failure to properly break in lifters will cause premature failure.
- After initial break-in oil change, drive vehicle conservatively for first 500 miles, avoiding sustained high RPM operation.
- Inspect for oil leaks after first drive and retorque valve covers if seepage is noted.
Verification
- Verify no oil leaks from valve covers, intake manifold, or valley pan after break-in period and cool-down.
- Confirm oil pressure reads normal at idle and under load (should be 25+ PSI at idle, 60+ PSI at cruise).
- Listen for abnormal valve train noise (ticking, clicking, or rattling) at idle and under light acceleration. Properly installed lifters should be nearly silent.
- Verify smooth engine operation without misfires, rough idle, or hesitation.
- Monitor oil consumption and coolant level over first 1000 miles to ensure no internal leaks developed.
- After 500 miles, inspect valve lash adjustment if equipped with adjustable rockers, though factory settings should be maintained.
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes after test drive to verify all sensors reconnected properly.
