Power Mirror Motor

Remove and replace the power mirror motor on a 2008 Dodge Viper by disassembling the door panel, disconnecting the mirror assembly, and replacing the failed motor unit.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake

Procedure

   Remove door panel fasteners

Remove any door handle trim escutcheon by carefully prying with a trim tool to release retaining clips, then remove the door handle mounting screws per the Viper-specific fastener callout.

   Disconnect door panel electrical connections
   Locate the power window switch assembly in the armrest area. Carefully pry up the switch assembly using a trim tool and disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight up. If equipped with power locks or additional switches in the door panel, disconnect those connectors as well.

   Release door panel retention clips
   Starting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, use a panel removal tool to carefully release the push-pin style retaining clips around the perimeter of the panel. Work your way around the panel, releasing clips at the bottom, sides, and front. There are typically 8-10 clips holding the panel. Once clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage it from the window sill channel at the top of the door.

   Remove door panel
   With all clips released and the panel lifted clear of the window sill, carefully pull the panel away from the door. Verify all electrical connections have been disconnected. Place the door panel on a protected surface with the interior side facing up.

   Access mirror assembly mounting
   Peel back or carefully remove the vapor barrier at the upper front corner of the door to access the mirror mounting area. The barrier may be held with adhesive or clips. Locate the mirror electrical connector inside the door cavity and disconnect it by pressing the release tab.

   Remove mirror assembly from door
   From inside the door cavity, locate the mirror mounting nuts that secure the mirror base to the door (verify exact count and socket size against 2008 Viper service documentation). Support the mirror from outside the vehicle while removing these nuts from inside. Carefully remove the entire mirror assembly from the door and place it on a clean work surface.

   Disassemble mirror housing
   With the mirror assembly on the work surface, remove the mirror glass by carefully inserting a trim tool behind the glass at the adjustment pivot point and releasing the retaining clips. The glass is typically held by spring clips. Once the glass is removed, locate the motor mounting screws on the back of the mirror housing (verify exact count and fastener type against 2008 Viper documentation; confirm the motor is individually serviceable rather than an integrated actuator).

   Remove failed mirror motor
   Remove the motor mounting screws and carefully separate the failed motor from the mirror housing. Note the orientation of the motor and the position of the electrical connector. The motor will have a gear assembly that interfaces with the mirror adjustment mechanism. Disconnect the internal wiring harness from the motor.

   Install new mirror motor
   Connect the internal wiring harness to the new mirror motor. Position the new motor in the mirror housing, ensuring the gear assembly properly meshes with the adjustment mechanism and the motor is oriented correctly. Install the motor mounting screws and tighten securely but avoid overtightening the small fasteners.

    Reassemble mirror housing
    Reinstall the mirror glass by aligning it with the adjustment pivot and pressing firmly until the retaining clips engage. Verify the glass is secure and moves freely on the adjustment mechanism.

    Reinstall mirror assembly to door
    Position the mirror assembly back onto the door mounting location from the outside. From inside the door cavity, install the 3 mounting nuts and tighten securely. Reconnect the mirror electrical connector inside the door cavity. Ensure the connector is fully seated and locked.

    Restore vapor barrier and test mirror
    Reposition the vapor barrier to its original location, ensuring it seals properly around the door cavity. Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal and test the mirror motor operation in all directions (up, down, left, right) using the interior switch. Verify smooth operation and full range of motion. Disconnect the battery again before proceeding.

    Reinstall door panel
    Position the door panel at the top of the door and engage it with the window sill channel. Route any electrical connectors through their respective openings. Reconnect all electrical connectors (window switches, lock switches) by pressing them firmly until they click into place. Align the panel with the door and firmly press around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips.

    Reinstall door panel hardware
    Reinstall the door handle mounting screws and tighten with a T20 Torx driver. Snap the door handle trim escutcheon back into place. Reinstall the armrest/door pull assembly screws and tighten with a T30 Torx driver.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall components in reverse order of removal
2. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before closing up the door panel
3. Verify all door panel clips are fully engaged before testing operation
4. Apply dielectric grease to electrical connectors during reassembly to prevent corrosion

Verification

• Reconnect the negative battery terminal
• Start the vehicle or turn the ignition to the accessory position
• Test the mirror adjustment in all four directions (up, down, left, right) using the interior switch
• Verify the mirror moves smoothly through its full range of motion without binding or unusual noise
• Check that the mirror holds position when adjustment is stopped
• Verify all door panel functions (windows, locks, handles) operate correctly after reassembly
• Inspect the door panel for proper fit and secure attachment with no gaps or rattles
